I believe it was the wakeup call he needed. If he hadnt lost to Thompson he would have had even more smoke blown up his ass and been on the end of a spectacular KO. I just wish he`d dedicate himself to training like he did for this fight.
I saw an interview with Haye some time later, he said he was livin like a fool, he believed that if he hit you clean you was gone, so he didn,t need to train that hard coz when it got to tough he would just knock em out. "My god did i get a wake up call"
I've still got this fight on tape, recorded off BBC1. Haye did get knocked down in the 5th, got back up and then took more unanswered shots that prompted his corner to throw in the towel. It's funny, when Thompson was somehow still standing after the end of the 3rd, you could kinda see how it was going. Firstly because Thompson had a rep for soaking up abuse and coming back, and indeed his previous fight was the famous Rocky-like effort against Rothmann. Secondly, Haye just totally turned to stone. His face I mean, you could just see it all over that he was exhausted already and was barely facially reacting when he was getting hit or throwing his own shots. He just had this same slightly sick-looking expression throughout rounds 4 and 5. When you're so tired that you can barely react, it's a problem! I was cheering for Thompson at the time. I liked Haye, but the Rothmann win for Thompson was such a feel-good one. I've been extremely glad to follow Haye's career closely since and see him make the necessary improvement to his game. Like I've always said throughout the years of that loss, and it's a familiar sentiment from a lot of people - sometimes you learn more from a single loss than you do from bowling over ten journeymen.
The Rothmann fight was one of the best comebacks i have ever seen. Sebastien was on the verge of a stoppage and was beating an old Thompson from pillar to post. All of a sudden he unleashes the hail mary and Sebastiens lights were out. His nickname was so apt. The guy had more than 9 lives thats for sure. Where never going to see a pro like Carl again.
