Im a Cotto fan, but i feel Canelo takes this. Never seen someone place his punches with so much hatred. I think you can out work Canelo or hurt him. Cotto may be able to hurt him (seeing as his younger brother did) and that makes it a good fight.

Cotto takes the first three rounds over Alvarez by outworking and outmaneuvering him with his lateral movement and jab. Alvarez keeps the high guard up, looking for openings to let loose, but has trouble finding them and doesn't throw a whole lot.

By round 4, though, I think Alvarez will be able to close the distance on Cotto, and get his right hand timed on Cotto's jab. He'll use the lead/counter right and his own ring-cutting ability to successfully close the distance on Cotto, and then we'll have a phone booth fight.

When that happens, I expect Canelo's greater size, strength, youth, handspeed, explosiveness, and power to wear Cotto down. Cotto's tough, game, and experienced, but his stamina is suspect late in fights, and against someone with Canelo's body attack and combination punching ability, that would be disastrous.

His infighting ability is more technical and polished than Alvarez at this point though (Alvarez right now seems to be a mid-ranged aggressive counterpuncher who looks to try and close in on an opponent before letting loose with his combos to break people down.) Alvarez actually reminds me a little of Tyson in that regard, except he doesn't possess Tyson's footspeed or defensive head movement yet. Cotto would try to use his jab to create distance at first, but when Alvarez's punches start to take a toll on his movement, my guess is he would stay in the pocket more and try to close the distance on Alvarez and fight in close so Canelo wouldn't get full power on his punches. Inevitably, though, that leaves the risk he could get timed and hit coming in, though he could definitely do some good work inside and tie up Canelo to break his rhythm and combinations.

I expect Cotto to take the first 3 rounds somewhat easily, but then I see Canelo getting more competitive, and by round 5 or so I expect them to be exchanging a lot (Cotto trying to do his work in close once he realizes he can't box and move nearly as easily anymore, Canelo trying to get Cotto coming in and keep him at the end of his shots.) Eventually, I expect Canelo's youth and superior physical attributes to weigh in on his behalf. I expect Cotto to be stopped between rounds 9 and 12 in a war.

Maybe the less damaged pre-Margarito Cotto. But this present Cotto? I don't think so.

This Cotto is actually better equipped to beat Canelo than that one was.

Cotto has a brilliant jab and if he wanted to stick behind it and box to a decision, he could do. Maybe that'd even force a late stoppage. If he wanted to be a bit more adventurous, that plays into Canelo's hands.

Right now, Cotto wins. In a couple of fights, Cotto will have declined further and Canelo will be better. I think at that point, Canelo wins but not right now.

alvares by ko 11th rd. cottos ability to take punishment is geting worse and worse. canelos shots will sap cotto of his strength reflexes by the 8th rd. his body will lose a split second in reaction time and he will get caught by a canelo combination and get dropped, he will stand up and continue and get dropped again and wont be able to beat the count.

Not sure who wins, its really a good matchup at this point. Cottos skills vs Canelos size, strength and power.

    Really cant call it.

Cotto but Alvarez makes a good account for himself. Possibly dropping Cotto at one point.

Canelo seems to get better through each fight,if he were to start out fast he could beat Cotto,if he is cautious and tenative due to Cotto's power I can see Cotto winning..

Canelo isn't smarter than cotto and he won't wear him down enough either. I see cotto catching canelo often when he throws his wide hook with his own left hook.
Canelo has good defense now, but he gets mental lapses where he'll get caught. if cotto can catch Floyd off guard and out of position with his jab often, you best believe canelo will be eating it also
