Ricky Hatton has confirmed his trainer as Bob Shannon,

The last thing Hatton needs at 33 coming back off a long lay off is another Billy Graham type trainer . Which will be just a full on body bag and weights session , with very little technique being taught.

Hatton needs a boxing lesson , even as bad as his days with Snr were in the Pacquiao fight you could see the work they had done in the Malignaggi fight.

Body bag work outs for me are completely useless unless you combine this with good pad work and Snr confirmed that Hatton couldnt do pads.

Lifting weights - at 33 this will only slow Hatton down.

Look for Hatton to look great in training . Look ripped at 147 , but this isnt body building.

Hatton will look shocking come 24 November.

    peace

I thought it was the wrong choice of trainer too at first, but after giving it some more thought you cant teach an old dog new tricks, & the point that Ricky was bigging Shannon up for using the Rik Walleresque(thats a fat bloke from Pop Idol for you younger posters) bodybag means its the type of training Hatton will be happy with, & if hes happy training? That can only be good for his motivation.

Will never forget Mayweather snr almost crushing Hattons spirit with too much roadwork & almost crushing Hattons ribs with a medicine ball, so Im thinking back to basics with an old manc trainer could be just what the doctor ordered for a happy Hatton & a succesful comeback.

Pads are ridiculously over-used and over-rated.

Trainers should only use them for warm up and warm down drills.

No, his best work was undoubtedly with Billy Graham. Hatton's a pressure fighter and the bodybag and pads with Billy were suited to that style. You underrate his footwork and the way he used to change angles coming forward. All that was missing against Pacquaio. He was coming forward in straight lines. Plus, Snr refused or couldn't give Hatton southpaw pads when he was getting ready to face Pac. What a massive and fatal mistake that was.

Pads, I agree, are overrated. A fighter can get a false sense of their power and timing due to the face the trainer is catching his shots. Pads are good for immediately after sparring and as part of a workout, but never the focus.

How else would you practice your accuracy, punch technique, head movement, combinations that you may wish to implement in a fight and so on without the use of pads?

Obviously there's other methods such as speed ball, heavy bag and other stuff, but that's pretty much self-training then. A trainer without pads is like a boxer without gloves.

When you're using the pads you're more bothered about hitting the pad than delivering the punch correctly.

Plus, your trainer should be watching what you're doing rather than taking part in it.

Hit the bags, or those dinner plate type bag things that Marquez works with.

Their training is excellent, compared to the shite that Vinceyboy does just slapping the fighter's gloves.

A half decent trainer could make you or me seem like a murderous banger with perfect technique. That's why they suck bad.

Well, delivering the punch correctly is down to your trainer to tell you if you are. And again, a good trainer would also watch what you're doing, too.

I'd like to see that. Maybe there's some Youtube footage?

I believe pads when used correctly are tools that you've gotta have. There's just no if or buts to it. Remember that right hook roll under **** from Roach that he kept practicing on Pacquiao. That's like a perfect example of implementation of what was practiced on pads and then brought forward into a fight.

I remember when I first bought a heavy bag and all that other equipment. I thought I was great, but when I hit the pads, I was so off in how I was punching (not extending my arms, not turning my punches, not being in the right position etc).

When a trainer is in the fighters position and giving you two targets (pads), it's half the script to what you need to do in a fight. That's what I found from doing pads.

Yep man he's a pressure fighter ( agressive ) .He's always struggled with southpaws as well ( Pacquiao Urango Collazo and a German am ) I still want to see him slugging at WW see what he has left if he makes weight safe .

To my knowledge he only lifted weights in 2 of his camps under the tutelage of Kerry Kayes, and it was mainly leg weights, its not like Ricky was bodybuilding to look good in the boozer ?

What exactly do you think he can learn at 33 that he doesnt already know that will take him approximately 8 weeks to digest ?

He needs a training camp, the ingredients in a training camp is a focus, he has a focus, he has that date booked, he needs to get in shape, re drill some technique and get some quality sparring in, if he was gonna strip it all down and start again he would be fighting next November instead !
