ESB article has it all: "Roy Jones ringside at ARENA’s big show in Munich, possible next opponent for Markus Beyer Great honour for Munich’s boxing fans and especially for three-time WBC super middleweight champion Markus Beyer who takes on Murat Mahmudov on March 14th in Munich after one and a half years of ring absence! Superstar Roy Jones, jr. is planning to come from Pensacola to Bavaria to watch Beyer who might be Jones’ next opponent.. In the past all attempts have failed to bring the “best boxer in the world” to Germany. Now it seems as if Jones, jr. is actually coming – ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner made it happen! Markus Beyer (34-3-1, 13 k.o.s) is very proud and excited about the possibility to fight the former world middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight champion who unified seven championship belts in 2001. Beyer: “If two great fighters and former champions come together for a big fight that always means big money!” ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner: “If we can make it and agree on deal I will do all I can to make the fight in Gemany!” Friday night’s show will be broadcasted live on German Pay-TV station Premiere from 10.30 p.m. (German time) on. There are still some tickets available at the counters. The official weigh-in takes place on Thursday, March 13th at 4 p.m. at the „Kesselhaus“ (Lilienthalallee 29) in Munich."
Great. Two conservative natural counterpunchers past their mid-thirties who barely throw 40 punches a round in another basically meaningless fight. That Ahmet Oner must have offered Jones a whole lot of $$$$.
The shocker here for me is not that Roy's ready to take on another washed-up former champ - probably as a lead-up to a Taylor or Calzaghe fight - but it's another big news with Ahmet Öner's name in it... It's quite stunning how Öner put Arena together in just a few months, sign some big names like Gomez, not only sign 3 Cuban Olympic champs, but make their trip to Germany, VISAs, papers, licence, a difficult trip for Gamboa's family, big German TV deal, GAMBOA'S FIGHT ON CUBAN TV D), an ESPN deal, an HBO deal, events promoted in Germany, Italy and the U.S. as well, deal with Shaw and now the possibility of bringing Jones to Germany... Sauerland and Universum never even came close to do that... If Jones just travels to be at ringside for the Beyer fight, it will be more than Universum could ever do in the Michalczewski era... And Öner's doing all this while some reports are referring to very serious tax evasion problems... I might don't want to know how he's doing this...
they dont want to see these fight cuz Jones would win. Beyer calling himself a great fighter is funny as hell to me:rofl
The thing that really pisses me off is Jones wouldnt go to Germany to fight Michalczewski for a number 1 vs 2 ranked fight (which although i am a Michalczewski fan i believe Jones would have won) but he is willing to go, or thinking about it now, when in reality beating Beyer doesnt mean ****:nono
First off Im not sure were you get that Jones would fight Beyer in Germany. The Article merely said that the guy was going to try and make the fight IN GERMANY. Secondly At the point when all the talk about Jones DM was going on. Jones was the MAN and didnt really need to go to anyone, they should have come to him. Money is what makes the world go round and Jones would have never made as much money to fight DM in Germany as he would have made to fight him in the States.
First I want to say that I'll be very surprised if this fight actually is going to happen. For me it's not even a given that Beyer will beat Mamudov. Second, if this fight happens it will not be worse than Roy vs. Tito Trinidad. Tito had an even longer lay-off than Beyer and fought at a much too high weight for him. Beyer at least is a true SMW. About Tito having a punchers chance, well I guess RJJ fighting abroad will make up for that. That said, Roy had three tune-up fights now and should fight a top-fighter instead of having another stay-busy fight (because that's what RJJ-Beyer is). Third, and that is a good thing, it would be a chance for european RJJ fans to see him fight live, even if he's past his prime.
He would have. Even all the boxing magazines said he would. Michalczewski is/was a bigger draw in Germany than Jones was in the US ( i mean in t.v. revenue, attendance, etc) I am not saying that he was better, but he would of/could of made more money by going to Germany and beating Daruisz than the other way around. About Beyer i believe it would probably happen in Germany as Beyer regularly fights in his home country, as many Germans do! Although i might be wrong, but Jones should walk through Beyer.
:nono Kessler is a little ***** for not fighting Maranda, I think Taylor would be a better fight :thumbsup
