so we both agree that Louis wins by ko? I'm glad to be in agreement with you BB :good p.s. Jones challenged Lewis, Tyson and Holy so I'm sure he'd have challenged Louis.
Louis would get his suspect chin checked while his head gets pulverized with the force of a thousand Tommy Morrisons, that's how powerful a prime RJJ is.
Louis drops three or four rounds trying to work behind his stiff, but not quick, jab. Jones comes over it, hooks around it, and slides around Louis. It'd look like the early rounds of the Conn fight. Eventually, Joe would figure out what he'd need to lead with, and how to step to keep targets open on Jones. Jones, just like Conn, would keep moving and keep throwing, and would eventually get clipped. I think Roy looks very, very good early, as Joe was a bit of a plodder against guys this style. But I honestly cannot envision an outcome where Roy stays away from Louis for more then 10 rounds. Joe Louis would only need a couple, and he'd fight with that sort of intent. He'd ultimately accomplish his goal, and it'd look similar to Roy's fight with Glen Johnson.
Jones only fought once at heavyweight, and beat a guy who was less than spectacular. He was around 34 years old when this happened, and would get knocked out by Tarver soon after.. If THIS version of Jones goes up against Louis its going to be a short night. John Ruiz was no master at cutting off the ring, throwing fast combos or finishing a staggered opponent. The other guy we're talking about was all of these things and more... Prime Louis KO 3 the one time heavyweight version of Jones.
not sure i understand why these guys are suddenly picking louis but they wont pick dempsey and marciano over jones
Because YUZO, they truly don't know how great H2H Jack Dempsey was as a fighter...They 90 years later in a more enlightened time don't like his politics, but they give an Ali,a PASS...:good
my thought was that they realized if they had picked jones over louis like they were picking jones over marciano and dempsey, they thus would have been implicitly ranking jones as one of the greatest heavyweights of all times i am waiting to start hearing some of this logic of why louis gives problems to jones but not marciano and dempsey, lets see if we can start to have this
I have yet to hear a compelling argument of how Jones stays away from the worst of these guys for fifteen. Tons of arguments exist on why he'd do well before getting overpowered. Nothing more.
I favour Spinks and Foster over Roy. I think Conteh's all round skillset pushed Jones hard but Roy's superiority in hand and footapeed should see him pick up a close one. Roy should just be quicker and more varied than Tunney but if The Fighting Marine can drop his right in without warning he might be able to catch Roy, and with 4/6 oz gloves that might be all he needs. Certainly has the speed and brain to push Roy hard. The likes of Charles, Moore, Patterson, Ellis; man, their is no way they'll not give Roy hassle. Dempsey would as well, I just fancy Roy to be able to survive and get off first enough to take the W. I'm not on the very recent 'Roy is a great heavyweight' bandwagon. I do think he's in there though. I think he'd give Marciano some hassle before getting beat down.
I think he'd give 99% of the fighters in his weight range hassle. His speed and athleticism were truly stunning.
Over 12 rounds, I'd give Roy a big chance. Louis, while very technically skilled and big, is way way too slow to catch hydrated or walk around weight 185 lb Roy. But Roy has never been tested over the 15 round distance. Roy is winning comfortably on the cards, but he gasses and got gets stopped late.
interesting point here its doesnt get brought up quite a lot but its very significant. the arms up blocking that fighters do in the modern era - it doesnt work with these gloves. when jones is on the ropes, he likes to put his arms up in such a way, but with these kinds of gloves that dempsey and tunney used his arms would just be totally pulverized if he attempted it - and his head would barely be covered by the size of his own gloves. this was why you saw no winky wrights back in the early gloves era. its said that fighters back then were primitive, but the way they fought was out of necessity it wasnt just like that without reason. when people ask who beats who between eras this issue about what gloves would be used isnt brought up enough
