Actually Willie Pep is probably one of the fighters who did the least training considering how great he was. Our own John Garfield watched him in the gym and said he was slack with his training. I believe him. His gas tank had probably more to do with him being so loose and relaxed in there.
Arguello was a beast of a trainer in the early days, and the mentions of Jeffries are spot on.I've read that he was always a level above others when it came to training. I'm fairly sure Chava Sanchez was very commited in the gym. I also remember reading someone saying that as an amateur,Mike McCallum was the most focused and dedicated they had ever seen.I think he outgrew Jamaica with that being one of the reasons.
Up until the second Toney fight I think Mike always came in in very good shape. Always worked really hard. After that I guess he relaxed his habits a little. As a LHW he had a sizeable belly, and could easily have stayed at lower weights if he worked that one off. But he probably (rightly) figured that his shot at the big pay-days was gone anyway, so why go through all that hassle. And he had the talent to still operate at a high level. Never took a beating. That McCallum was after all a world class LHW in his late 30's, while probably less than truly dedicated at that point, says a lot about how gifted and skilled the man was. His late career is underrated IMO.
Very much so.For me the best champion at 154(allowing for Tommy's brief reign) He has one of the best and strongest resumes of the modern era.
Tony Tubbs. (Sorry, had to say it). I'll say Hagler. He was known to have an insane training regimen. He would do things like run 6-7 miles a day backwards and sideways.
:admin 8 hours!!?? That's insane I'm dead after 3 - and then I need to sleep for for a few hours haha those two I have absolutely never seen even the slightest bit out of shape and I can't think of another fighter at heavy (bar Tunney) who I could say that about - even Marciano didn't seem tip top for Cockell - the Klitschko's for me take this at heavy
The pace isn't crazy. It's very steady, intense work. All the things I've heard about old timing heavyweights is that their training is rather frantic. All about "getting it", so to speak. Me, I would run 5-6 miles in the morning, do about 90 minutes in the gym on bags and shadowboxing, take a nap, eat some lunch, lift, do my core work, and do another 90 minutes to two hours on pads, bags, and rope. Unless it was a sparring day, I'd end it there. The Klits had a very similar routine. Just, you know, more badass and with more uniform facial expressions. And pools.
It's still sounds unfathomable to us mere mortals though haha - your own routine sounds like pure murder - the 6 miles at the start would do me in for the day haha but yeah it's just the fact that the Klitschko's have never embarrassed themselves or the title by coming in slobbish and overweight they're nothing but professional and I'm no expert but I would imagine its harder for bigger guys like that to go through that kind of rigorous stuff - but they just look like champions everytime they get in the ring
I remember reading Ali used to run forever! I heard Trinidad used to run marathons also, he must've trained hard, he had great stamina.
The big thing for big guys in the knees, and none of us have great ones. The roadwork is something you build yourself up to, same as the gym work. 2-3 camps a year, if you keep in decent form between, and its just like any other job. Part of my it was so unfathomable for young Ali to have the legs he had was that they held up on him, no matter what he put them through. I feel like I creak every time I walk. I've heard rumors that Marciano would challenge himself, every single round, on any bag, in any exercise, to fill every single second with punch, breathe, or movement, no rest. That would take a true animal, with an iron constitution.
If the rumours are to be believed, it was his lack of dedication and partying that cost him at the end of his career.
Marciano locked himself away during camp...2-3 weeks before a fight...no newspapers...no outside contact...just work his ass off and focus on his opponent...
