After the post on Felix Savon i thought I'd throw up a highlight clip I found of Teofilo Stevenson, Cuba's other triple Olympic boxing gold medalist for the benefit of anyone who had never seen footage of him. He won gold at the 72, 76 and 1980 Olympics and missed the 84 due to boycott. Rest In Peace Teofilo [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bln2HBSqYy0[/ame]
One of my all time faves to watch footage of, this guy was amazing, he was offered 1 million to fight ali, which was big money at the time but knocked it back. His reasoning was "what is 1 million dollars compared to the love of 10 million cubans"
Yeah just like Savon being offered money to fight Tyson. You have to respect the Cubans for standing by their principles. They'd rather live in Cuba in what we class as 3rd world living conditions as heroes, than leave and chase the money
I am currently doing some research on Teofilo for a university project and I was wondering if anyone knows what was done for his funeral in Cuba, Was it a national public event, was Castro himself there?? What is being done to commemorate him within Cuba?
Used to love watching the Olympics back in those days especially the Boxing , they were massive days for the amature sport and the names didn't get any biger than Stevenson . R.I.P Champ .
