Why the double standards?For Bute-Froch and Calzaghe-Lacy?

Lacy was a terrific win back then. And should still be considered a very good win at least now.

It's funny how the tide turned where, back then, it was Calzaghe who didn't belong in the ring with Lacy. And now, looking back, after Calzaghe went onto achieve what he did, it is the other way around.

 

Agreed. I think part of the reason the 2 fights sometimes get brought up in tandem is the unexpected ( to most) nature of each victory.
Should Bute fade away like Lacy did, 5,6 years from now the perspective might be different.

2 big differences to me are that Calzaghe, despite being further into his career than Lacy, was largely an unknown commodity.

Froch had been on the big stage before. He was known and had been measured against some of the premier guys, win or lose. Bute was more of the unknown commodity.

 

The difference with the two fights is that Lacy as you say had his soul taken from him due to being clinically taken apart for 12 rds and humiliated, where as Bute got done quickly which means he`ll probably get back up there somewhere.

Tell me what is the more humiliating defeat getting beaten quick from rd3 to 5 or being completely outboxed and made to look like a novice by a guy with brittle hands who nullifies your power with precision and timing despite you being a worldchamp with 2 belts

Do you consider Ward's victory over Abraham a great win since Abe was one of the favorites to win the Super 6?

 

Bute is a much better win than Lacy and had more experience despite the lack of solid opposition on his resume. It's fairly simple, Lacy had 21 fights going in against Calzaghe who had 40(At that point, in 40 fights, Lacy was his best opponent by far), both Bute and Froch had 30 fights. No double standards whatsoever, the reason why Calzaghe got attention is because after 40 professional fights, Jeff Lacy was his biggest/best opponent to date and he was overlooked because no one knew he existed. Terrible comparison.

 

I think the manner in which Calzaghe beat Jeff Lacy has maybe 90-95% to do with why Lacy had a diminished career afterwards. He was pretty much damaged goods, at the hands of Calzhaghe. Great win for both fighters though.

Both are massive wins for both fighters, end of. I picked Joe against Lacy and Bute vs Froch but that doesn't change the fact that they were both big underdogs heading in.

Pre-fight perceptions mean a lot.

 

Froch would've KTFO of Lacy too.
