Why is it that Americans hate so much on British Boxers?

The p4p excuse again.. atsch You realize this isn't the 70's anymore, right? Fewer and fewer Americans are getting into boxing nowadays, most Americans are more interested in the NFL, Basketball, and MMA.. and they're shutting down gyms. Boxing has always been a sport for the minorities in the big cities.. and The UK is producing more boxers than America.. yet they're all getting brutally knocked out.. the next one due is Kell Brooke.

I find that hard to believe.

 

I think the Americans view a lot of British fighters as over protected. They love guys like Froch, Lewis and Honeyghan because they were not protected and took on all comers. Barry McGuigan is derided for failing to face Azumah Nelson whereas Hatton is appreciated for facing Tyzu, Mayweather, Castillo and Pacquiao.

American use other sports as an excuse for them producing a generation of sub par boxers. They say 'people are going into other sports'.

Newsflash - people have always been going into other sports.

In Europe football (proper football) is the biggest sport there is and is played by nearly every kid going...yet it does not prevent people starting boxing.

 

It's not an excuse it's a fact. I've no reason to make excuses.

Number of active American heavyweights: 406
Number of active UK heavyweights: 33

Number of active American heavyweights: 220
Number of active UK middleweights: 102

Number of active Bantamweights in the US: 35
Number of active Bantamweights in the UK: 18

There are more Americans than UK fighters competing in every single division. I could list every division but you're probably embarrassed enough as it is.

 

Good point. I find a lot amatuerisim in the boxing press, Steve Kim, Dan Rafael who strike me as rather unproffesional at times with their feuds with various boxers, the bias on HBO which can border on dishonesty at times. There are honourable exceptions however. Al Bernstein, Reg Gutterige, Hugh Mcillvaney, Bad Left Hook.

As for Americans hating on Brits? I wouldn't go by the gf as a reliable indicator of your average American fight fan. That's like saying all Brits are like Arran.

 

The British media are probably worse. Steve Bunce. The Sky crew. They are stuck up the arse of every Brit fighter.

 

Don't have Sky but I've heard the complaints on here.

 

Probably due to the inability of the vast majority of Brits to find any middle ground at all inbetween elite level and utter ****.

Maybe because we hype a lot of our fighters up too much, and then they expect them to be very very very good boxers, top fighters, have good skills, technically good, sound balance, but are let down after hearing alot of good stuff and then our boxers not meeting their expectations. Although i would say, Hatton, Lennox, Calzaghe, Froch have done ok. Oh yeah And Naz.

On the whole boxing fans love to hate anyone who they dont like or follow. I still hear people hating on Pacman and Floyd even though they have entertained us a lot in recent years.

The way i see it, any boxer anywhere in the world should just **** the haters, work hard, and give it their all. Its their own health that they are putting at risk, not someone who is sat million miles away in front of a PC.

 

Because it works both ways... so you can call it "nation rivalry".
Same with Brits and Poles, with the whole glass jaw crap (wich country has worse chins).

I see British fans ridicule American fighters, American fans ridicule British fighters and the rest of the world ridicules both for massively hyping up their 'own' fighters.

 

It's number 3 and nothing else. People in the US just see British fighters as hype jobs that don't possess any real boxing skills. British fighters are stereotypically one dimensional fighters that just have 1 gear and come forward all fight. Basically, they don't seem to have the ability to be smart in a ring, analyze and switch up depending on what is needed. It's just a old time scrap mentality, scrap, scrap, scrap. They can only fight one way, and only thrive in one type of fight. I suppose it provides and exciting fight, but people in the US want to see a bit more, what skills have you got?

Only a handful of British fighters have bridged the gap, at the moment I can only think of Joe Calzaghe, but they even used the excuse that, "He slaps!"....because he was good and was beating there boys.

However, it is changing here, and boxers are adopting a more "US style" approach. Slowly but surely the old way of doing things is starting to die out, and we are seeing the fighters that are still trying to do things the old way, getting beat.

Junior Witter, Dereck Chisora, Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan for instance.

We do have some fighters with boxing skill now, more so than ever, Kell Brook, David Haye, Ricky Burns, James DeGale, George Groves, Chris Eubank Jr.....just off the top of my head.
