Was Tyson really a great puncher, or just a fast/accurate puncher?

His raw power is undisputed in my opinion. Off the top of my head, I can think of numerous examples of one-punch KO's he administered. Even so, I personally feel that power alone isn't the main factor that causes a one-punch KO.

I was once knocked down and senseless by a guy in sparring who I'd seen working the heavy bag for weeks and thought to myself "he doesn't hit that hard!". After I came round to my senses, my trainer said that he had thrown a left hook that wouldn't have put his grandma down - I just didn't see it coming... Still, if it was a real match I wouldn't have been able to continue.

So, I don't feel that the amount of one-punch KO's a fighter has accumulated accurately represents the amount of power they possess.

Foreman, for example, is praised as one of the hardest hitters of all time: yet how many one punch KO's did he administer as a proportion of victories?

No other fighter can throw full power combos as fast as Mike Tyson could. Hector Camacho was close, but his power wasn't as great.

Its beyond belief to see "boxing fans" argue against Tyson's punching power. Whats happening to this place.

i agree to a certain extent.

tyson had incredible speed and good power

i think his opponents didnt see the punches coming which was why they were so devastating.

pinklon thomas certainly astood up to a lot of full blooded shots before he went down!

Tbf Pink had a great chin, even past his prime when Holy & Bowe used him as a punching bag he never went down.

I cant think of many HWs who wouldve survived that barrage as long as Pink did.

He was a big puncher, loads of natural raw power...was also fast and accurate.

    :good

In terms of KO percentage, the breakdown between these three looks like this:

    1) Vitali Klitschko (87%)
    2) George Foreman (83%)
    3) Mike Tyson (75%)

...but any sane observer who's seen enough of them knows that in reality, their power should be ranked more like this:

    1) Mike Tyson
    2) George Foreman
    3) Vitali Klitschko

    In fact, to further illustrate:

Tyson > Foreman (debatable, and close) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Klitschko

Sure, you're welcome to that opinion. I just don't see too much in Shavers's actual fights that might support the argument. But both men packed serious punching power, so as far as that goes it's a moot point.

He had the whole package, sheer power, accuracy and explosiveness.

Anyone who says "He didn't hit HARD, he hit fast" does not know what they're talking about and obviously never stepped foot in a ring, he hit hard as a truck and he hit fast.

"Was Tyson really a great puncher, or just a fast/accurate puncher?"

Dumbest question ever asked on ESB.!
