I disagree. Who did Liston really prove his metal against? Young Cleveland Williams win was good. Patterson was tiny. Thats it, as far as I know. The media had built him up as a monster, but its not like he hadnt lost before. How old was he anyway?
He lost to Frazier when they were both undefeated. Frazier took that "0" off of him. I dont give any credit to Ali for "winning" the second fight. That was a absurd display of mugging, all ****ing night. My boy Wladimir Klitschko was probably even disgusted with that one. He didnt fight that night. He did beat a shop worn Frazier in the third fight, granted. Good thing Joe was so prone to lumping up as he got older, right?
Norton? Norton was considered a good opponent BECAUSE he beat Ali's ass and broke his jaw. Second fight could've gone either way, third fight Ken got ROBBED.
Foreman win WAS excellent. Of course, George gave him a shot, why was it never returned? Because Ali wasnt a dumb ass, imo. He knew damn well he wasnt going to pull that **** off twice. (Im really not trolling, If you dont agree, tell me why Im wrong.)
Now, dont get me wrong, I am not saying Ali wasnt great. Just pointing out that his resume isnt ALL that when compared to Louis. To say he "Dominated" his era isnt really accurate, the way I see it. The division was very competitive, and Ali did do very well. Even rose to the top a couple of times.
If that is the measuring stick, isn't Holyfield at least on par with Ali?
Ali is considered great because people remember him beating the odds and pulling off a couple upsets. You know whats even better then that? Never being the underdog AND creaming the competition. Thats what Louis did. Now that, my friend, is true DOMINANCE, imo.

Absolute nonsense, imho. H2H? Joe Louis,H2H, probably. This sport evolves. He had all he could do to keep a 5'10", 202lb Joe Frazier off of him. Got torn up pretty good doing it. What the hell would he do with Fraziers mutated freak show version, known as Iron Mike Tyson. Look at the tricky **** he had to pull to beat the 6'3, clubbing 217lb prime, crude clubbing Foreman. Can you imagine what it would take to pull that **** off against a 6'5, elite punching 245 lb Lewis? Christ, a right hand to the chest would send a prime Ali flying across the ****ing ring. The man was around 205 in his prime. I truly do have a hard time understanding people who think this way. Of course Ali looks faster and more skilled than the recent giants...he 40 lbs. LIGHTER!! Not to mention 3-4 inches shorter. Doesnt Manny Pacqiauio look faster and more skilled than Carl Froch? Put them in the ring together once, and watch what happens. Kind off a bad example...the weight difference isnt enough in Pac-Froch. :deal

 

No fighter can be considered greatest of all time they all have flaws and vulnerabilities for one reason or another.

When considering Ali dont forget Jimmy Young got robbed in the first fight and that was 100 % prime Ali.

 

The fact that you give Ali no credit for the Frazier 2 & Norton 2 fights speaks volumes... Ali definitely won those fights.

Ali is the greatest ever HW, consensus says so & at his peak (1964-67) was the best fighter the division ever had. Louis has to settle for 2nd place.

Why? You honestly believe that a 6'3", 205lb. guy who got knocked down and dominated by a 5'10" cruiser weight when he was undefeated and lost so many rounds to a 217 lb crude slugger could stay in the ring with the 6'5, 245 lb. prime, superbly crafted Lewis? The 6'6", 244lb safety first Wladimir Klitschko? I cant imagine that. I think his toughness and craftiness could keep in on the right side of the ropes for a while, probably. But that has only one eventual outcome, and it isnt a good one for Ali. The sport evolves. If guys that size could still compete with the modern monsters, they would be doing it. Ali had considerable trouble with the 6'5, 212 lb Ernie Terrell. Never did get him out of there. Check out Terell's resume compared to Lewis. This argument is absurd. Tell me why I am wrong.
