Bill Conn in today's boxing enviorment....How great would he be?

He would absolutely run riot.

He would have more weight classes to choose from, and four major titles per division.

There would be no world war to cut his career short.

He would get mixed results in the lower weight classes, but pick up some silverware.

When he hit his prime at super middleweigh, light heavyweight and cruiserweight, there would not be many people who could stand up to him. Expect him to be lineal in two of these categories.

He would likley still end up in the heavyweight division, and have some sucess.

Only two men beat him between mw and cw for me and that's Martinez and Ward.

They're fifty fifty affairs but everyone else he should beat. I imagine he'd go about 54-3 splitting a series with Sergio and losing a trilogy to ward before picking up a cw belt and retiring.

He could certainly be a top heavyweight, but the wall between him and any meaningfull title would be 6' 7''.

 

Conn won the Lighthvy title at 21, and had already beaten a few HOF'ers by that time. He fought Louis when he was 23. Apart from the war, his biggest hindrance was Louis.
What version of Conn are you thinking of? The one that fought at middle?

I thought Conn looked a lesser fighter at 160. Seemed better when he was the smaller, quicker man.

The 185-190lb guys who fight at light heavy nowadays would be his best bet for glory IMO, he'd take Froch no probs and clean up Shumenov, Clev, Dawson, Pascal etc etc

 

I think he'd reign at 175 lbs as long as he wanted to. For heavyweight, his limit might be a man like Tomasz Adamek.

Ward could be tricky for an early 1939 Conn, but I still don't see him doing the trick, and as more Martinez? He is the perfect example of the smoke and mirrors illusion of modern boxing. An aged fighter propped up by nutrition and inconsistent activity.
When Conn fought at middleweight, he beat fellow HOF'er Apostoli in back to back fights along with yarosz and krieger. IMO, putting Martinez in that era would be like dropping a 38 year old medallion man in a teenage disco and expecting to get 'lucky.'

so billy conn almost beat a 200 pound joe louis while weighting 165...but he would "likely lose to alverez?...ps, the conn that fought louis could have shown up to fight canelo...lose 14 pounds of water weight in a sauna the day before and put it back on is easy to do.

 

I wouldn't pick anyone around his own size to beat him. Very few who are bigger even.

 

Well I pick the mw version to go 1-1 against Sergio. I pick the lhw version to lose a trilogy to ward.
