Another Brit here. Another Ward fan. Judging from the thread so far it would seem that Brits don't dislike Ward. No doubt some people wish Brits did dislike him because that would most likely give them something to fuel their own negative opinion of Brits. However it's simply inaccurate to suggest Brits seem to dislike Ward.
I believe it will be made at some point, but I do believe he has to beat some good fighters. He needs to beat one or two good guys, A-level guys, and even in some cases come out of his hometown and do it to get a shot, Ward told On the Ropes radio. I think with some of the talk lately about me ducking him, I think after the schedule that the combatants in the Super Six have been on in the past two years, its really foolish to even bring up the notion that somebody is ducking Bute. I mean thats just not the case. Like I said, I believe thats a fight that should be made and will be made, but at the same time we have to be smart in this game. Ward noted two opponents, Andre Dirrell and Carl Froch, as fights Bute could take to affirm his standing as an elite fighter. I mean Ive heard Dirrell say he wants to fight Bute, and Dirrells on the comeback trail. I think that would be a great fight, said Ward. Carl Froch, I think personally Froch will probably take a tune-up fight or a lesser fight to kind of regroup, but thats up to his team and after that I think he should go to Lucian Bute. Those are the kind of guys I think he needs to beat and then I think the fight would even be bigger, and I think he would then warrant a shot at some of the big belts that we have.
The sad thing for Ward is that if he was the one that beat Bute first and then moved up to fight Dawson at his proper weight he would likely be considered P4P#1 by most fans and boxing writers. He's not going to get that title by beating a hungover Pavlik that's for sure.
Clearly? I don't know about that. With that logic, Kessler clearly didn't want anymore part in the super 6 because he didn't want to lose his title again. If you had said Bute was a clear duck, it would of been a bit of a stretch but I would've least understood it. Dirrell leaving the tournament is far from a "clear" duck on Ward's part.
The consensus of this thread from the brits is something like..."I like Ward, but he's a dirty, hometown fighter who would lose if he fought outside Oakland. I respect him, but he is boring in the ring, has a boring personality, ducked Bute, and would get destroyed by Calzaghe." Back handed compliments anyone? The dislike is just bubbling under the surface, so obviously. To those brits who genuinely like Ward: I really am sorry your countrymen have painted you in such a bias light, you guys are true fans of the sport.
:deal Ward is the best fighter at 168, would like to see him fight away from home just to see if it makes a difference.
Not going to bother reading through this drivel and yet another thread about Andre Ward with American posters with their tongues firmly in his ass, but the term over-rated springs to mind. Would just like to add that I genuinely don't mind him and he comes across decent. I just don't think he is as Godly as everyone makes out.
We also need to stop generalizing. All people do not believe one thing . DIfferent posters will ahve different views. Let us start there.
another british ward fan, ward is the best fighter at 168, dont see point in froch rematch as it would end up the same outcome.Would like 2 see him fight kessler again but in denmark or if bute if froch fight doesnt happen or if he beats froch.
so you endorse cheating do you? it's funny isn't it, when the fighter doing the cheating is american, you have no problem what so ever. but if it's someone outside of your country, you're very quick to jump... :think hypocrisy isn't a good trait to have. but you seem to be very happy and comfortable in the knowledge that you have it. good luck to you. and no, i won't go and watch another sport because i love boxing. just hate cheating and robberies where ever they are. as should all GENUINE boxing fans.
you seem to be really reaching there. i think i'm the only brit that hates the guy. the rest of them said they like him or don't mind him. trying to justify your thread on 1 hate, and a couple of "he's a bit boring" just doesn't cut the mustard. you got your answer with the vast majority being fans of his. :deal
He isn't my favourite fighter but I don't dislike him. Would rather watch Froch or Kessler fight but ward has proved he is the best in the division and I appreciate he got there by beating the best.
