Worst world tile reigns by British fighters?

No one's pretending it was a HOF reign but if you look at the names on the first page and consider he won it from an excellent champion who he was extremely lucky to get a shot at,then to say Burns is one of Britain's worst world champions is at best laughable and at worst,ridiculous.
Who are you comparing him to,Carl Froch?

 

I was ten when he got the title. Everyone was so chuffed for him. But I remember he was always in the papers and they were going OTT on his win.

He totally bottled it against Tyson.

Burns at lightweight has been a solid reign, its alright slagging mitchell off now and saying its obvious burns would win and the same against katsidids, but then why hasnt eveyrone made a ton off burns? because the bookies didnt have it that obvious. his SFW reign was awful, but he won it off a good champion so that gives him a bit of a pass in terms of the worst reign ever

 

To me, 'reign' implies WHEN a fighter is champion, not who they beat to gain the belt, this meaning that the Martonez fight wouldn't count in this thread. The Martinez win is very good, for sure, but his 130 reign was horrific. Literally awful, and one of the worst ever by a British fighter.

Salita was an unbeaten fighter, Malignaggi is a respected world champion, Maidana was a feared puncher whom many thought Khan would 'avoid' and Judah was supposedly revitalised under Whittaker and a reigning world champion.

 

Remember it is in context of the 1980's Cruiserweight division; the so called '*******' division.

The presumption was DeLeon was calling it a day; the best Europe seemingly had to offer was Sammy Reeson and a former Journeyman Heavyweight (McCrory), and that was it. Thus it was fair, if you were American, to assume Lumumba was probably the best of a shockingly bad lot.

As I said amongst WBO reigns, there is a clear winner/loser: Eamonn Loughran.

Owned in his first defense against a Tyson virtually straight out of prison. Collapsed like a house of cards - poor showing.

 

But beat McCall, who had taken Lewis' '0'. Sure McCall was hardly the greatest of all time, but compared to some British wins that gained titles, particularly WBO belts, a victory over Oliver was almost Turpin/Robinsonesque...

OK, fair point. Bruno went into a Tyson rematch (amazingly with hindsight) a live underdog. He helped create a huge British sporting event (SKY's First PPV), he brought of thousands of fans with him to the USA. So it could be argued Tyson/BrunoII, no matter what the result, is going to top Paul Weir beating a Lindi Memani or Chris Pyatt beating Hugo Corti and Mark Cameron...
