This content is protected As previously reported by FightNews, former two-time WBO champion Joan Guzman and IBO Light Welterweight champ Khabib Allakhverdiev will tangle for the WBA Regular Super Lightweight title on November 30, in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the Bank Atlantic Center. Both fighters repreentatives involved- Vladimir Hrunov (Allakhverdiev) and Henry Rivalta of Aquinity Promotions (Guzman) presented the finalized contracts today at the WBA convention in Jakarta, Indonesia. The WBA is sanctioning the bout as former regular champ Marcos Maidana vacated to move to Welterweight and Danny Garcia is the Super champion after unifying his own WBC belt with that of WBA champ Amir Khan. Sigh, still hoping he gets a shot at the best before age diminishes his ability compete with the best, but I feel it may be time to give up on that notion. Maybe I'll give it one more year
For a guy who some believed would give a 130 lb Pac a run for his money, he never really took off career wise.
Good fight, all things considered. Guzman is a waste of talent but Khabib is a pretty legit JWW. Should be interesting. Winner becomes Garcia's mandatory?
just wondering... how come joan didn't get the breaks in his career to propel into stardom. was it poor matchmaking? lack of discipline ie not meeting the agreed weight.. etc. we all know that pac grab all opportunities when he was still trying to make a name for himself by fighting ledhwaba and barerra..
I can give you some reasons: 1) Weight issues -partially negligence, partially personal problems- 2) Management problems 3) Lack of public appeal -Joan is the kind of athlete people love to hate- 4) Too skillful for his own good- used to showboat during fights, making it difficult for fans to like him-... But of all the reasons we can point out, the most important one is the one least mentioned: Joan's huge talents and low profitability levels have made him one of the most avoided fighters in boxing in the last decade. His talents were directly proportional to his 'dislike-ability'. Even now, hey, specially now that he is old and no longer holds a belt, no one wants to fight Joan. In his prime, a fight against Manny was hotly rumored. Pacman's team said 'no, no'. No money there, too much risk. Personally, I think Manny would have taken the fight and possibly won, had the decision been up to him. But it did not happen. Khan and García are the most recent examples. Khan refused to fight Joan, allegedly, because he needed a more renowned fighter. He chose Molina. Exactly, Molina. And Danny, intelligently, of course (I understand) chose to shift weight classes just to get better (that translates into more lucrative, easier) fights. The fact that Joan, at 36, is still being forced to beat journeymen to "earn" a big name shot, and boxing fans continue to think him 'the biggest waste of talent', does not exclude that other fact, that Joan is an incredibly talented boxer and that his hunger for a third world title drives him. I think Joan will beat Allakhverdiev on Nov 30th, and that that fight will get him a step closer to grabbing that third world title. Some of the 140 pounders can defeat Joan. But there's another side to all coins: Joan Guzmán can defeat anybody when he's focused. I think he is focused right now.
