He did exactly what was required for my Ovil in 1-3 bet to come in. A classy performance all round from IJL.
I just think he's lost the ability (not sure if he had some before I started watching boxing) to read a fight properly. Having calmed down somewhat nut) I'm now of the opinion that if he didn't think that Enzo should be fighting anymore, he should have refused the appointment, and could justifyably say something along the lines of... ''Look, I reffed his last fight and he was being smacked around for quite some time before coming back to win a decision. This opponent is much more experienced, much more dangerous and, in my professional opinion, this contest shouldn't take place''. It's clear that Enzo's rep for having a weak chin cost him here, but it wasn't as if he was in serious trouble. Ovil would have stopped him, but that doesn't justify what he did. I fully understand an official not wanting to have a Watson or a McClellan type incident on their conscience, but you're in a high pressure situation and you've got to use your experience to guide you in any situation. At York Hall last week he timed a stoppage perfectly. A guy was hit with what seemed a nothing punch, clearly didn't fancy it, turned his back and ran away, rightly stopped. Last night he just panicked, like a debutant referee would have done.
I'd get that if he'd waved the fight off immediately, but he had a good ol' think about it first. Was a very weird way to go about things.
I had a lot of money on round 2, but I didn't want to won like that. That said, I don't think it was the worst stoppage I've seen. The Scott Quigg - Jamie Arthur fight was much worse. Ovill did at least land a good shot which rocked Enzo back at little. The Quigg - Arthur fight, Scott landed a body shot and the ref waved it off. That was worse for me. Buy IJL has done it a few times now. When a ref says sorry to a fighter for his mistake, action needs to be taken.
Didn't watch the fight, but he seems to make mistakes far too often. Wasn't he in charge when Briggs got beaten into intensive care against Vitali?
No one's allowed to go back to the ropes when hurt either. That's a very common stoppage for fighters right now in the UK. Hurt, on the ropes, defending yourself? Stoppage time.
Yep, I'm not saying I want fighters to get brain damage, but this is their profession let them at least have a chance to practice it
