One would had guessed that there was a guy with some common sense in his corner to tell him to use his height and reach advantage and just box Holy's ears off from distance.

A much clearer win than Lewis managed to get over a faded Holy, while primarily boxing behind the jab from mid-to-long range.

 

stupid because it exposed him to unnecessary punishment which added to the punishment he later got from golota left him with permanent brain damage.


Sure why would a 6ft.5 guy use his physical advantages and fight behind his jab keeping his smaller opponent at distance, when he could make it harder by fighting at close range giving the smaller guy a better chance to hurt him?

sure dont get me wrong the dogfight between those 2 was exciting from a fans perspective, but technically and tactically it was utter shite especially from Bowe's POV.

And Tezels is trying to say that current HW's cant do this.

I dont care who was in his corner, it could be mother Theresa herself, it doesnt change the fact that that was some very poor showing of tactical and technical craftsmanship.

 

No but I wouldn't call a pro fighter a ***** while I'm just sitting in an arm chair. Internet gives people too much security to say insults they damn sure wouldn't say face to face.

 

Some of the best defensive "hit and don't get hit" boxers (Pep, Locche, Benitez, Toney etc.) of all time ended their careers with brain damage. So spare me.

Bowe was trained to box with a style that revolved around exploiting his strengths as a fighter, like most are. He was a big, strong, tough, durable, mauler with devastating power. But had poor footwork. You can't fight with a "mid-to-long range" style with success if you have slow feet. ESPECIALLY against an opponent like a Prime Holyfield. Hell, a peak Lennox Lewis could barely pull it off against a slower & more faded Holyfield.

Bowe's supposed "stupid gameplan" netted him a clear, decisive win anyway (and a knockout victory a few years later) so it's a moot point.

 

He outweighed Holyfield by a considerable margin (30 lbs. first fight, 32 lbs. 2nd fight) and was the clearly stronger guy. If anything, Bowe must have been thinking 'come to poppa.'

Being such an able infighter with a wide variety of punches, I don't see anything wrong with the strategy at all. He took a lot of shots sure, but he must have felt that he could take Holy's power and dish out harder punches in return.

Also, can we be sure Bowe would have actually been able to outbox Holyfield? At times in the fight they did box, and Bowe seemed no better able to deal with Holyfield then.
