In this era titles mean nothing, the fighter makes the title whether that is a Ring belt or a WBU version...

The WBU 'reign' of Hatton's was not without its uses. It meant SKY could bill the fights as 'world title' fights, and Hatton got an education in a tough division. The initial learning fights with Magee and Phillips, and then the evidence that he may have what it took to give Tszyu a fight with the more polished performances against Tackie and Oliveira.

As suggested maybe Hatton overdid it by six months or so, but basically the 'WBU reign' was a solid base that helped when he did step up and fight the elite of the division.

The WBU reign was designed to protect him and move him how his promoter chose. This included not fighting Witter or world class fighters til much later.

The reign ended when Hatton got pissed off with his promoter as people started to question him. His promoter tried to deliver Pinto, who pulled out sick and then Arum stepped in with Cotto to show who was the bigger promoter and could get his way. He then tried to deliver Harris who said no due to money and he had to go to Tszyu.

The path of least resistance was the desired route and theres a reason Hatton left his promoter after his defining fight. He'd had enough and got the big fights on his own but he did pick up how to be a saavy money making businessman along the way. Remember when he turned down Floyd earlier and waited for it to be a bigger fight so he could earn a **** load.

 

He made a lot of money, beat the top guy in his division and ended his career with Super fights against Floyd and Manny. He bowed out with a huge fight in Manchester. He had a great career, far better than many who are technically better. I bet 99.99% of boxers would be happy having 20 thousand supporters or more paying to watch them in WBU fights or getting knocked out alone. The WBA\IBF and Ring titles are the cherry on the top. He has a lot of experience to pass on. I hope he continues as a trainer.

Dont see how he wasted his career?

At the very most, (toward the end of his WBU reign) he could have had 1 or 2 more fring world class contenders on his 'CV' instead of a couple of WBU handpicked opponents but lets face it, it wouldn't have changed how people will see his career.

Its a simple as this....... He was a good World Class fighter (no doubts whatsoever) who failed on the elite stage against arguably the great 2 fighters of his generation.

Fantastic career which he should be incredibly proud of.

 

I think he spent a year or so more then he needed, Maybe developed a few bad habits along the way. Tough to say but he did well really..

 

when people use the WBU title or IBO or various abc titles. they make it seem like hatton considered him THE world champion. lets remove the wbu title and look at the opponants he fought. they are not world class fighters but they are VERY tough oponnants. magee,pendleton, stewart, pep, hutchinson, tackie, phillips, vilches, oliveira.

none of them are a class fighters. but thats pretty tough competition. if a prospect from the states fought all of those guys he would have a number 1 ranking in a "established" boxing comission. and im not saying that being american would of helped im saying that had a berto or a malignaggi beat those opponants he would of been in a mandatory position way before then.

he just never had the champion status for long personally. just the best man at the weight. he went from prospect to contender for a long time then champion for a while....then it collapsed and fell apart.


he fought regurlarly, he fought hard, had agressive strong performances and most often or not ended in a ko. he was tv dynamite for 6 years.

 

The problem with IBO, WBU etc is they are not an established level and thus are used to protect fighters and con the fans. If you are British or WBC champ you will fight at a level. They aren't trouble free but WBU etc are truly scum of the earth and make boxing a non-sport with absolutely no competative architecture.

 

I think he was 26/27 years old by the time he was IBF champ- that is surely good going in anyone's books, UK fighters rarely get a proper belt any younger than that. Cant see how he can be considered a waster on this basis.

People need to get over the Ricky-bashing and let him enjoy retirement as a legend. Maybe he will be less likely to turn back to booze/drugs/suicide if he knows fewer people are starting threads like this about him
