Saul Canelo Alverez is only 22 years old!

He's been chamion for awhile. Why should he be given a break?

It really is time for Alvarez to step up. He wants the big money fights now and hasn't proved himself to be a fighter who deserves those type of fights. He doesn't fight guys who can be competitive with him, and now he wants the big boys. He needs to prove himself against decent opposition in my book.

 

And he's tried (which for his age is quite impressive). He's campaigned for a matchup with Mayweather since the end of 2011.

He was set to fight the dangerous Paul Williams until his tragic motorcycle accident. Next, Kirkland turned down the fight because he wanted a bigger paycheck. Then, Lopez upsets Ortiz.

Being a hot prospect, this kind of criticism is expected. The fact, he's just 22 is overlooked.

 

That's the huge misconception: he hasn't been "champion for awhile." His belt means nothing and we should all know that.

He's not number one in the division, he hasn't been number one in the division, nor does he or anyone who represents him proclaim him to be.

Because he's not spamming the media with proclamations that he's the best 154 pounder in the world. If I, or him, was here professing to the world that he's the absolute demigod of pugilism - then we'd have a problem. But I'm not.

He's being progressed just like any prospect would.

 

So when should we look for a world class opponent for him? When he has 100 fights ?

 

I have zero problem with Alvarez himself for taking what's given to him. It's his title that I have a problem with. And the sopping wet **** that heads the organisation that controls that title and allows him to have it without having to face the top names of his division. Alvarez is just making his way in the world. Sulaiman is creating soft circumstances to ensure his Mexican star-power is safe and there are fights that aren't getting made because of it.

 

Canelo is a stud. Very, very good fighter. Excellent mechanics, a nose for a fight, and discipline and grit. I don't see him improving a ton, honestly, but he might, if a good portion of his prime is yet to come; He looks well grown, but he might yet get stronger and a bit quicker, which would serve elements of his style just fine.
He's not a true champion, though. He was handed a belt in charity, and those this is not his call, his team and him are not taking any fight worthy of the title.

Time for the baby to make a real defense or stop pretending to be a champion.

41 fights was all he needed to be matched up with Paul Williams.

But I'm sure, whomever your favorite boxer is, he was fighting world class opposition at just 22 years of age as well, right?
