Flintoff only fighting 2 minute rounds?

I'm not convinced gassing will be Freddie's problem. Well not from nerves anyway. If there's one thing he will have an advantage in, compared to almost any boxer making a televised debut (and over his opponent) is that he's comfortable enough on the big stage. Does he have the ability to dodge a beating for 8 minutes... that's another question.

 

I felt certain that 12 minutes was the minimum duration for a professional boxing contest

ie: 4 x 3 or 6 x 2

Is a special concession being made for this buffoon?

Price is fighting at 9.30pm Flintoff straight after, most likely 10.00pm.

 

Cheers, I might be home at that time. I doubt Price will be long with ole Matt, probably prop him for a couple of rounds of light sparring to give the punters a show.

 

Flintoff is doing it for the right reasons, he wants to test himself in a new way. I don't think McGuigan would have stuck with it if it was going to be embarrassing. Come on Freddie!

 

A number of inexperienced pros start with the 2 min rounds. I'd rather they didn't and just started with 4x3 and slowly moved through the distances. 2 min rounds suggests you really shouldn't be a pro.

Nevertheless, it might show that Freddies taking it seriously and starting small.

 

just to clarify the Board rule:

"3.7 In all Contests the number of rounds shall be specified. No contest shall exceed 12 rounds nor be less than 8 minutes of actual boxing. Rounds shall be of 3 minute duration with an interval between each round of 1 minute. In Contests of 10 rounds or less the rounds may be of 2 minute duration."

do tend to see a lot of 4 x 3's or 6 x 2's but rarely 4 x 2's.

I think that Freddie might be lucky to see the end of the first 2 minutes....round duration is probably a bit of a moot point

Exactly. Whenever I've been to a show and you hear the phrase '2 minute rounds', it's always a bit naff. The whole 2 minute rounds thing is archaic, and as you say, if you can't fight 3 minute rounds like 99% of the other pro fights worldwide, you shouldn't be there.
