Am I the only one who is completely unimpressed with Gamboa? He doesn't seem to have grown much as a fighter. His defense is very poor and he relies way too much on his athleticism. He's a poor man's roy jones. This guy has always had a lot of potential, but he simply hasn't improved. As soon as he runs into a good boxer (like prince naseem vs barrera), he will be in for a rude awakening. I think he needs a better trainer.
I like how people forget his knockout of Solis and wins over Salido and Ponce De Leon never happened. When he fights responsibly, he shows great potential. He needs to develop more, but after being over a year out of the game, it's understandable to slip up against a fighter who was better than people expected simply because he didn't have a name.
Gamboa has no chance, NONE at becoming anything more than a journeyman. I have no idea why he is talked about as anything special.
I like Gamboa he is clearly very powerful, fast and explosive however Roger Mayweather said he isn't being trained enough boxing skills which I think is true, he needs to develop more and fast, when he fights someone who is as powerful as himself he will run into some serious issues. He REALLY needs to STOP hitting the deck....he has some nice wins so I do think he very very good but at this point Broner murks him.
I think he definitely underestimated a very live underdog in Ferenas. He has great speed and reflexes, but he he is a step below elite level. If he can't hurt his opponent, his arsenal looks less than impressive. His chin is bad, but his conditioning is very good, as he recovered quickly.
He actually reminds me of a young Zab. Great speed, decent power, and average defense. When they get their opponents hurt, they completely go wild/sloppy. If Gamboa isnt careful, his career end up like Zab's i.e. never reaching elite status or being elite for a VERY short period of time.
130& up Gamboa will lose his edge. He don't have enough punching power & his speed is diminished. (Too much bulk, So little arms) 148lbs on fight night is kinda troublesome. But let's chalk it up to Rust & a diamond in the rough in Farenas. (Actually last night made me a Farenas fan... Keep an eye out for him)
give him a pass, he looked worse than I've ever seen him last night, slower and no ring iq but ring rust is a ***** to shake off vs a determined opponent. give him a couple more fights to gauge properly.
