So, I think Marquez has now reached a higher level of status in the boxing world, a defining moment of greatness. But how does he compare to the great champion, Julio Cesar Chavez?
JMM is definitely in Mexico's top ten champs of all-time. However, JCC was on a different level. His chin was levels above JMM and his defense was also a few levels above Marquez'. The difference? JCC beat you down with skill (not brawling a la Ricardo Mayorga), out-willed his opponents, and would decimate his opponent if they tried to stand toe-to-toe. JCC would have never lost to a Chris John (even if it was a robbery). JCC' ring IQ was just as good, if not better than JMM', and that is something that I believe a lot of people don't recognize about JCC. Sorry JMM, but JCC > you.
Chavez would rip him apart and Whitaker would have given him a boxing lesson of a lifetime, marquez is top 100 but not top 50. As for mexicans, i say saldivar has a pretty strong resume for the #2 spot.
