Some love to fight too much, others just wanna get as much cash out of the game as possible, one way or another, boxers find it extremely difficult to walk away from the sport when they should, and vultures around them looking for their own interest are rarely helping. So... would you pay a small sum, say a "$20 PPV" for a fighter to retire, sign some paper, give up his licence or whatever, if you knew this act would surely guarantee you won't see given fighter in the ring again, potentially knocked out cold for long-term health issues? You could get some sort of non-serious walk-away show for your money, it's not important. What's important is: would you open your pocket to save a fighter from further harm?
ON paper? Sure. In reality? **** no, he'll turn up fighting in ****ing East Texas or Australia fighting on a new licence.
Hard to answer with those 2 options because it entirely depends on the situation. Although clear that a lot of the shot boxers out there are climbing in the ring because they have to pay their (high) bills, I think it's their own reponsibilty. Most of them put themselves in that situation because of their lifestyle and they still have a method to get a steady income, wich other people don't necessary have. Maybe if it's clear that the boxer's financial situation is completely not of his own doing I would consider it, because there are a few who were conned by their managers etc....
This is happening as we speak, BB! Fighters in the late stages of their careers can make money on the after-dinner speeches circuit, they write auto-biographies, they go on TV as commentators, etc. If the money is good enough (i.e. if the punters are happy to watch them do these things) then they can afford to retire. If not, they can't. So people have a big say in whether a fighter gets to retire at a certain point in time or not anyways.
