I used to enjoy watching him fight and I thought he was good for the image of British boxing. He was in some entertaining fights and I liked the fact that although he was a bit of a prettyboy he was not afraid to go toe to toe and get involved in real scraps. He really pushed a prime Calzaghe (although it could be argued that Joe didn't put in his best performance that night). I'm disappointed to see him still fighting though.
Was a good fighter, never ducked anyone, gave Calzaghe his hardest fight, and was clearly robbed against Sven Ottke,a tough night for anyone, seemed a decent guy aswell and was clearly one of the most handsome boxer ever,ha..
Can remember him or one of his entourage calling Micky Vann a bent twat after he stopped hin when he fought Froch
Remember one of Michael Gomez' fans after the Johannesson loss going up to the camera and going "Mickey Vanns a bent *******! Mickey Vanns a bent *******!...A bent *******!!"
Strange fighter that I always liked, but could get very frustrated watching. Examples - - He goes to Italy and rips the title off the champ Nardiello, stopping him - Fights well in a tough back and forth fight with Wharton - Has a good fight with Pretorius really going for it in the first round. Hope someone remembers this fight and this first round - Beats Cherifi in a tough close fight then it goes a bit strange - Does very little, next to nothing against Malinga and losses his title in a fight he could have easily won - has a warm up and gives Calzaghe a real tough fight, which seems like the end to the real Robin Reid to me - Looks terrible against Branco and losses a winnable fight - Fights some very nothing fights for a while and seems a different fighter to the one who had a workrate against Calzaghe - Challenges Ottke and although he was treated bad and looked to have won, wasnt fighting like the old Reid who was fighting against Wharton, Calzaghe, Pretorious, Cherifi, Nardiello - Beats undefeated B Magee, knocking him down 4 times but looks so lazy in the fight and looked like he could have stopped Magee whenever he wants, but doesnt seem to go for it like what I call the old Reid would have He seemed to have a lazy performance against Malinga and his last fight where he seemed like the old Reid was against Calzaghe, against Branco onwards he never seemed like the old Reid who would attack and go for the KO. Still always liked Reid but feel he could have done more
Me as well, only seen the fight once mind. Other people say Joe won it clearly but it was not how I saw it on the night.
Seems the type of bloke who just likes to fight.People keep saying he should quit but I always get the impression he really enjoys it so why should he.He never really gets a battering and dont seem to mind being used as a bit of a measuring stick as he was in his last fight.
I wonder if that has just become something to say because it was a tough fight and Calzaghe was never defeated, like with Mayweather and Castillo. Ask yourself this. How could you not score rounds 2, 3, 4,7, 8 ( This content is protected ), 12 to Calzaghe? Remember Reid had a point deducted also. I thought like 2 judges that Calzaghe was a clear winner and except for McCrory who scored a draw and later seemed to agree all of the other studio guest scored wide for Calzaghe including Mcguigan and Eubank. I also think damaged handed (damaged his hand in round 4) Calzaghe won and felt he won rounds 1, 9 (Reid did land the punch of the night in round 9 though) & 11. Good away win for Calzaghe
