Do any of you know if I can just go in there and train?
How do they feel about foreigners training there?
Could I get some pointers from Beristain himself?

We will be staying in Mexico City itself for 6 days, then going to visit Chichen itza for 2/3 nights, then travelling onto the coast. I would love to train at JMM's gym with Beristain, so if you know anything about this, would be much appreciated.

Uh he's a tourist. Take your most expensive camera and at a leisure pace take pics and enjoy the sites. I'm sure Nacho will mold you into a world champ in 6 days. :D

As Orriray59 mentioned, be careful. Not in the gym it's self. But the area where the gym is, is full of trouble and shady thugs.

Ride in taxi, might be the more expensive route but it's the safest.

Romanza gym is located in Colonia Iztacalco, look for the streets Anil and Resina Romanza is in between there.

Also try to visit the Cleto Reyes boxing gloves factory It's location is:
Wagner No. 289 Colonia Vallejo 07870, México D.F.

Be safe and take plenty of pictures. Chichen Itza is awesome!!!!

I would advise against it, just because of the area where the Gym is located.

The folks in the Colonia know who is who, and they will know you and see you coming.

It's definitely possible. I think as long as your show up you can find out, it never hurts to ask.

Just a few tips based on general trends I've experienced. He is a pretty famous trainer now, it's not going to be easy to get in touch with him or train with him personally. A lot of the big time trainers like to work with their pupils and competitors and not as much with beginners. So it also depends on your skill and competition level. It's also how they make a living so they aren't likely to spend much time with non-competitors since they aren't going to win any purse winnings. If you are a beginner they are also usually not going to give you advice that you can't get from a less famous trainer in the gym or another gym.

However with that said I still highly encourage you to go. Who knows he might be one of the cool trainers that like to work with everyone. From what I saw on 24/7 he doesn't even hold mitts, he teaches large classes to either move or punch based on timing. I don't think it would be out of the question to get in on one of those sessions. If you are a competitor many gyms like to have new looks for their athletes. However I would highly discourage it without your own trainer because most gyms have a tendency to let you get beat up against higher level opponents.

Anyhow I'm sure it will be a great experience just to check out the gym, talk to people and the feel for it. Good luck!

  11. Dude it is possible to get there and train there for some time.
Don't expect Beristain to give you all the time in the world and give you pointers, he just cannot do that in such a short time, he needs to know you. You can talk with him for a while but don't expect enlightenment in 2-3 days.
I believe that with the right amount of money (not expensive) they can allow you to train for 2 or 3 days even spar if you feel brave :D

I went before, it was going well until I attempted the shoulder roll and Nacho got really mad for some reason.

You should call them ahead of time, to ask, tell them you are willing to pay whatever membership fees. (that's the route I would take)

Once you get a green light that it is cool, then get a taxi to take you there, make sure you get a taxi to take you back.

That's how I would do it, but given you are gonna me in Mexico City, I would be more concerned with drinking mexican beer, eating mexican food, and smashing Mexican ladies. Not training, where I do that back home

But if you do go, and it does work out let us know how it went.
