British Commentary vs. American Commentary

Darke's the best of the bunch. Lampley's probably the worst. Showtime's commentary is much better than HBO's.
Best ever was Don Dunphy. A guy who would remark upon things worth remarking upon, come out with a few facts and not blather over everything.

Guy's like Lampley (and he especially) believe they have to call every punch,-blather-blather-blather and as a result often enthuse about how hard a missed punch was or like in Pac Marqu 4 how a gumshield is out when it isn't because he daren't pause his gob for long enough to look at the canvas and check. I love it when Jones correct's Lampley, he's so blunt with him.

 

I actually like Channel 5's commentary- if they could somehow employ Ian Darke to sit alongside Al Bernstein that would be ace.

There may be a lot of crap British commentators but American Commentary in general is absolute gash. Embarrassingly bad, you'd think it was a bit in a sketch show where they parody sports commentators.

Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman, how those two ever got approved to be on TV is completely beyond the limits of my brain. Larry Merchant, the less said about him the better.

Jim Gray for Showtime, completely cringeworthy and **** poor.

Nearly all American commentators are just thick twats. Only good one I can think is Al Bernstein. He really knows his onions does Al and he's never bias for or against any fighter. Manny Steward too when he was alive.

Jim Watt can be a bit twat but for I agree with him 85% - 90% of the time. Ian Darke is in a league of his own.

 

Agree with Lampley hate when he starts calling the action you'd think it was on radio the way Jim goes on. Don't mind him when he is just talking though.

 

One of the worst posts on this topic ever. I agree with you on Al Bernstein and Manny Steward, that's all. The Jim Watt and Ian Darke line just proves one or maybe two things...either you don't have a ****ing clue or you are a troll, or both, idiot.

 

Lampley does my head in with his idiotic comments, but he has got an amazing voice for a play-by-play announcer, really captures the excitement of a fight.

Never understood the love for Darke, he has no technical knowledge on boxing what so ever.

 

Compare all of above mentioned to Reg Gutteridge or Harry Carpenter and you realise just how **** commentating is these days on both sides of the pond.

American presentation is miles better than British. From the theme tune, design of the ring canvass, ring card girls to the pre and post fight analysis, and commentary. Completely different atmosphere. You can hear the passion in the voice from Lampley and Kellerman. Sometimes they get it wrong, but who doesn't? Jim Watt ruins the feel of the fight because he has a very sombre, depressing way of calling the action. Just sounds like he's moaning the whole time. The show 24/7 has gone a bit stale lately, but it's still class. HBO know how to turn a fight into something bigger. Winners recognize this. Mediocre people find it too cheesy, but winners will hear the music, hear the quotes, and be driven to do something great themselves. Showtime do a great job too.

 

Lampley is alright when he doesn't have a blatant agenda.

That's unfortunately rare these days.
