No excuse for losing to Garcia or Marquez. You can't possibly hate on Roach because JCC Jr lost to Sergio. No trainer could help Jr beat Serg.
Khan should have won the bout? This is boxing. Khan has many a flaw, Khan will always have many a flaw, this is why he will always be in competitive bouts at world level, and will lose bouts at world level. Khan also can't really stick to a gameplan, when he listened to Roach, he had success, when he didn't...well, he didn't. Chavez was expected to lose that bout, but again it is boxing (as you seen in the 12th). Roach did great to even get Chavez in a position to go up against Martinez, and his limited ability (not down to Roach) was there to be seen. Pacquiao was in competitive bouts with a great boxer in Marquez throughout many a weight class. Pacquiao was having the most success against Marquez leading up to the KO since the very first bout. This was down to Roach, he chose boxing over S and C, and it was working. Marquez was just too good and landed that shot. You overrate a coaches ability in the corner. A coach has under a minute to offer advise to help said boxer in the coming round. This information is limited and direct, it is up to the boxer to then perform said adjustments/tactics. The coach has more influence in the training camp than he will in the corner of a bout. It is up to the boxer to then perform and use intelligence to change gameplan once in the ring. Agree and disagree with this. Outright knowledge of the sport can be debated. You can argue that there are people who have more knowledge of the sport than Roach. People who follow the sport more, and know the goings on in the sport better than Roach. But then, being a coach is not just having the knowledge of the sport. You have to be a teacher, you have to express your knowledge correctly and as clear as possible for a boxer to understand and implement. I can guarantee that in this case, and in a combined case (including the above paragraph about knowledge of the sport) no one on ESB knows the sport better than Roach. No one can inspire a boxer like Roach, no one can introduce skills like Roach, no one can teach technique like Roach, etc, etc. Like I said, a coach is not just about having knowledge of the sport, it includes many a factor, including mental. Go to a gym and walk up to a a big juice head. You would expect him to be able to teach you how to get in shape, know every muscle used, how to perform exercises to perfect technique, how to write a programme up, etc. But in truth, the majority would not be able to. They are okay at training themselves, but don't know how to express their knowledge to someone else. Same goes for boxing. Take a boxer as an example, they will be great at training themselves because they know how their body works and reacts. But then you ask them to train/teach someone else, and the majority teach people how they box, not how to throw punches properly, etc.
Roach's fighters have no defense. They get caught clean when they fight off balance with no D. Why in the hell does Khan with his long arms and speed always fight so close with his fragile chin leaning forward, exposed? Pac learned about two moves he did every damn time and he always fought off balance. And Chavez Jr., well, I won't blame that on Roach. Chavez JR. is a lost cause with little skill, a huge ego, and a weed problem.
The guy has always been a joke! Most over rated trainer ever, plus I can't stand how after his fighters win he would be all up in the camera but nowhere to be found when they get ktfo! **** roach the joke
attacking anything pac or pac-related with no sense at all. must be the frustrations for all these years.
True! I will say though that the first person I wanted HBO to focus on with the camera after JMM's KO was Freddie Roach's face. That man has rubbed people the wrong way with his egotistical ridiculous comments over the last several years. "Manny is going to knock Marquez out and prove who won the last 3 fights." Thats just an erroneous ridiculous thing to say that I did want to see the pain on Roach's sorry face and enjoy his suffering from having seen his fighter get KTFO by Marquez. Pacquiao I respect, Roach I dont! Loved it at the post fight press conference, no ****ing smirk on that idiots face!
The trainer/cornerman cant fight the fight for their charge. And can you blame the corner when the fighter doesnt listen. I do not think that Freddie taught Pac to lead with his face. Same goes for Floyd Mayweather Sr. He didnt teach Ricky Hatton to lead with his face.
Doesn't matter who their trainer is when Khan, and to a lesser extent Pacquiao, find themselves in deep water. Khan thinks he's Chuvalo reborn and Pac reverts to his old wild self. Chavez Jr was never that good to begin with anyway, Freddie was just polishing a turd. No doubt the same people criticising him would come over all falsely sentimental if Roach died, same as Manny Steward. Roach is a world class trainer and then some, only a full-on ****** would think otherwise.
