Oscar De La Hoya-Pernell Whitaker Build Up Feature

You're acting as if Oscar didn't land good punches, he was rocking pernell's head back every round. I just posted a video and time of him landing a bunch of great punches in one round. Look at pernell's eye for proof of that. Most of pernell's jabs were just lazy measure punches. Oscar landed the more effective clean punches throughout the fight and that's exactly why he won.

 

LOL, it was pernel purposely using his head against oscar and cutting oscar's eye with it. Pernell's eye was from a clean punch, you are the first person i've ever heard discredit the eye for a headbutt.

 

Watch the fight, or just watch 19:20 mark of the video i posted and watch how many good punches oscar lands inside 1 minute, let alone the whole fight. lol

 

And that may be true, except Pernel was intimidated to stand with Oscar and scared to get hurt. I don't blame him for that but when you're doing as much dancing as pernel was doing you better atleast try to make a fight of it. You have Oscar that was putting the heat on Pernell all night making a valiant effort to fight, but Pernell ducking and running and dancing but not throwing more than just a jab here and there.

 

I really feel Permell was just out gunned in that fight ..He's still a legend but he lost that fight ,just didn't do enough to get him the nod .

Pernell won by 1 or 2 rounds imo

 

Pernell won that fight in my opinion. I'm not going to say he was robbed because it was real close. But every time I watched the fight, I have Pernell winning.

 

I remember Roy was asked by Merchant if Pernell was getting old and Roy said, just a little bit, he's just a little bit slower then he once was. That was probably the difference that cost him the fight. Even in the pre-fight Pernell kept saying that this fight wouldnt define him and kept trying to take significance away from it almost as if he felt he may lose. Pernell is an ATG regardless and respect his skills and at times his defense looked amazing, but he didn't do anything that stamped an exclamation mark on the fight. Oscar's persistence, even in missing alot (which was expected), is really why he won the fight. You could tell he wanted it badly and wanted to fight. Then you have Pernell acting silly and goofing off, but not landing meaningful punches, where as Oscar was landing some good shots here and there even though he did miss alot.

 

I think that is because fans like you get excited by his great defense but forget he has next to zero offense. I remember watching this fight live on PPV beside a guy that was rooting for pernell. I remember thinkin "what fight is this guy watching?" cause I admired Oscar's strong effort to fight and saw Pernells head getting rocked back several times throughout. When the decision was announced this guy was like "wtf!" and i look at him and said "I must have been watching a different fight because Oscar did more than pernell, you don't get points for ducking and dancing".

 

Not enough activity in some of the rds for Whitiker Is what I think cost him the fight.Lets not also forget the accidental head butt point deduction they gave him as well .Dam shame that rule was in play back then never did understand that rule .

 

I doubt it. I consider things like ring generalship as well. I haven't scored this fight in a year but this was my scorecard.

whitaker was the champ and won the fight with a jab alone. DLH did nothing to take the title from him. Nothing but theatrics.
