Mayweather, Jones, and Whitaker were too dominant at their best to have rivals shoul

I actually rate it very highly, Chicanito was a class operator (and class guy as well, so I have a bit of a soft spot for him.) Chavez is a fighter that is always going to give Pernell an edge in comparing resumes because Floyd just doesn't have that caliber of a win on his record. I'd also consider Nelson pretty much a surefire ATG (albeit a lower tier than JCC) who had quite a bit left when he encountered Whitaker. There's room for detraction if you felt Nelson wasn't the same size in the ring or able to implement his style in the same fashion -- To me, he was simply outclassed. McGirt is a guy who I suppose could be overrated to a degree-- his resume isn't the best, though he was a superb technician; looked great in beating Simon Brown on his ascension to the top of the welterweight ranks in the early 90's before Whitaker came up to meet him. One of the best gauges of his ability is actually in the first fight with Pea himself, which was one of the best 147 fights of the last couple decades if you've got an appreciation for high skill level exhibition. The second was good too, but pretty one-sided after the second round. He's probably best defined as a very good fighter, who was in his prime at the time. I'd put him above anybody Floyd's faced at 140 and up and at least an equivalent test to Corrales, Hernandez and Castillo in a P4P sense.

That has to be a New upload. **** was too real in those days... Take me back!

And yeah, the more Merchant clips I see, the more I believe he's a borderline Whitaker fanboy. It kind of disproves a lot about what people insinuate about him and these are views he had as it was unfolding rather than in hindsight.

Merchant was a fan, no doubt. He never really warmed the same way to Jones or Mayweather.

Merchant did have quite a bit of love for Pac and Mosley though.

I think more than anything, Larry realised the 'authenticity' behind those guys, whereas he saw Floyd and Roy as being a bit fake or disingenuous about their intentions in boxing, at least as their careers progressed.

Just a guess though, he never said anything as such....

He always seemed appreciative or complimentary of him and his ability during fights, but it's the almost gushing praise in all these newly uploaded HBO feature spots that are surprising.

Merchant: "Pernell Whitaker is about 100,000% right." :rofl :nut :rofl

One hundred billion percents right. :rasta

Yeah, and it's rare to see Lampley in the more reserved mode, next to someone else fanboying.

I get your overall point, but considering Ward's best win at the time of Mayweather-Marquez was Edison Miranda, yes I think rating Marquez higher was accurate.

The fact that Whitaker went in roughed Chavez up and got the best of him on the inside must have been quite a shock.

Whitaker was a mean little *******

Yeah, Bernstein was right in that he tended to fight more in the pocket as he went up in weight and started to lose footspeed. He was incredibly skilled inside, but sometimes traded when it wasn't in his best interest. McGirt II was an entertaining scrap.

In fairness I probably have just as many posts whining about Top Rank as I do about Martinez :D

Murray will last into the 11th like his countrymen.
