I always understood it as he quit because he felt that Sugar would not stand up and fight. He thought Sugar was just there to clown around. This is the version I heard but in reality his pride I think got in the way. Sugar was being a clown but he was being completely elusive, pot shotting, scoring up points, and showboating. I'm sure there was a bit of disgust but Duran lived by a knock the other guy out or get knocked out philosophy.
I honestly believe Duran was in no shape to fight. They didn't want to turn down the huge payday and brought in Duran while he was not ready physically. He could have been sick or simply feeling his strength leaving his body, and, fearing an embarrassment in the later rounds, quit.
Partly true. Duran had balooned a bit between fights and was using diuretics and laxatives to make weight. It's rumored that he got BAAAAAD cramps halfway through the fight and badly needed a **** (maybe even started one). I would rather judge their merits when both men were healthy and ready for the fight, as was the case in Montreal.
Hmmm there are some stains on his trunks but nothing inside of them,So i think not.Doesnt look like they are washed that much.
well when he says links I figure he wants to watch it. It was a fight where Ray fought his fight and Duran quit when Ray started to land his punches.
All true but at the end of the day the buck stops with Duran and his camp. It was an important fight and the least he could have done was trained hard and turned up in shape. For that first fight he caught lightning in a bottle and he was never able to muster that same drive/intensity ever again. Leonard was too sharp next time around.
