http://www.fighthype.com/news/article13780.html Well at least Dawson is going back to a trainer who is familar with him. I've said all long that Dawson made a mistake hiring Scully and firing Steward. The last three fights Chad was fighting different and not effective. This is why it's so important for a boxer to have an established team, and not switch trainers all the time or at all. Bernard Hopkins for example has had the team throughout his career and so has Andre Ward. Manny Pacquiao has been with Freddie Roach for over a decade. Dawson has had seven different trainers, probably the main reason his skills are declining. I understand some boxers need a new trainer, but switching trainers seven times? And Chad is still in his prime.
Scully did a terrible job with Dawson. He tried to turn Dawson into an inside fighter, which made Dawson's jab ineffective. It's not that Scully is a bad trainer, it's just that he doesn't have enough experience with Chad to know how he should be boxing. Had Scully been Dawson's trainer the last two years, Dawson would have been better prepared against Hopkins and Ward. At least Muhammad has experience with Chad.
He's mentally fragile and no trainer can change that and when they try to change that he changes trainer.
It's all well and good blaming a trainer for every poor performance, but if you're not mentally strong enough you won't succeed in this game. It's a harsh, unforgiving sport where you can't hide your mental weaknesses, and no amount of chopping and changing trainers will mask any mental problems. Chad simply doesn't have it upstairs and his skills are a bit over-rated anyway imo. Next time he comes up against a skilled fighter who is mentally strong and determined to win, he'll lose again.
He switched trainers 8 times already, that's his problem. Had he stuck with Floyd Mayweather Sr he probably would be undefeated right now. You are right though, his problem is upstairs because he has a bad attitude and he's made a lot of stupid decisions in his career that has effected performance in the ring. For example firing Emanuel Steward when he was scheduled to face Hopkins. When a boxer gets a new trainer, the trainer has to evaluate the fighter, knows what his strengths and weakness are, what the trainer needs to do make him fight effective. Multiply that by eight, so everytime Chad gets a new trainer he's always going back to square one, that's why Chad is never progressing but always regressing. At least Eddie Muhammad has experience training Chad. But Chad's performance under Muhammad was not all that good either. He only looked good under Floyd Sr, so we'll see if Muhammad can improve Dawson.
I don't think he'd be undefeated tbh. He lost against Pascal because he lacked desire and focus and just basically got bum-rushed. Late on in the fight it was as if a lightbulb went in his head and he thought "ohh ****, i'm going to lose here if i don't do something quickly!", but it was too late. He's simply not good enough to beat Ward either. I agree that changing trainer doesn't help, but the reason he changes trainer is, imo, because he lacks to balls to take the blame for his constant poor performances. He needs to man up, and i don't think he has it in him.
He went back to Scully, won one of the biggest fights of his career, and leaves him again after one loss to a guy that it didn't matter who was training him he or anybody else was going to lose. And now he goes back to a guy he "had chemistry with," same thing I heard about him reuniting with Scully.
And the training carousel continues for Dawson. Two fights from now, win or lose he'll switch again, then again, then again, then again.
Floyd Sr. is rough around the edges to get used to. Or to be more blunt, Chad doesn't like to have to deal with being called ****** and ****** by a guy he's paying.
Say what you about Floyd Sr, he made Chad fight to the best of his abilities. It's no coincidence that once Chad left Sr, he looked worse. And Sr called Chad a ****** and a ****** after he fired him. I don't know why he fired Sr, but the strange thing was Chad fired him two weeks before a scheduled fight. Something must of escalated between the two for Chad to do that.
