Chavez was more popular but IMO Ricardo Lopez is the greatest Mexican ever!

Sanchez, Chavez, Lopez, or Saldivar I have no problem for being the best. They all have an argument for being best. Whether its longetivity, quality, skillset, adaptability, etc. But yea had Finito beaten Carbajal or Gonzales I'd have no problem putting him over the more popular Chavez. Alvarez had a very short prime, but at his prime he was a little beast! He gave a past his prime Finito hell, but no doubt a prime Finito would of struggled much less. Extremely hard to stay on top in a lighter weight division so Finito being in the lightest weight division dominating it and defeating a young, powerful rival who was supposed to be his successor that says alot. His skills are unreal. A very elegant, but deadly boxing. Like,watching a master fencer or swordsman at work.

 

Finto was the best technical boxer Mexico ever gave the world. His work is like lethal ballet! Julio was just a monster and the epitome of the working class, blood and guts, leave it all in the ring. Julio deserves all the credit he gets. In my opinion, Carlos Zarate is often overlooked by boxeo Mexicano. His KO power was unreal!

 

Chavez is the most popular choice, but I don't have a problem with anyone who says Lopez, Sanchez or Olivares. I think Finito should have fought Carbajal and Gonzalez to prove his greatness though.

 

Chavez's ability is often overlooked. He was a more complete fighter than Finito.

They both had their own styles & were stronger than each other in certain areas but Chavez beat the better fighters & was dominant for a longer period, so you can argue all year about who was better because that will always be debatable as both were amongst the best fighters ever, not just amongst Mexicans but period, but what isn`t debatable is which fighter was greater & the answer is clearly Chavez.

Sanchez was greater than Lopez as well, for the record.

I think Meldrick Taylor on the night JCC fought him (first time) was better than 2011-12 Pacquiao. I may be inclined to say the same for Lockridge. And Rosario.

we all know manny got robbed vs bradley, and i was pretty impressed on how he handled bradley so easy.....

 

there could be a strong argument for a lot of mexicans...no doubt chavez was the most popular and celebrated, but it is a tough call when you really sit down to think about it.....

Being an immense talent coming into his prime years, his actual performance and ability shown in the fight itself, right from the opening bell almost. I don't think Chavez completely ruined him as some would speculate (he did beat Aaron Davis ten months later) but he definitely took something out of him.

 

I agree with Hands of Iron.

Edwin Rosario and Meldrick Taylor, on the nights they both fought Chavez, were better and more formidable opponents than Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera were on the nights they lost to Juan Manuel Marquez.

 

Ricardo Finito Lopez' issue is his resume. He fought plenty of nobodies due to him being in a weak division. However, his technique, skill, and natural talent place him among the greatest to lace up. Chavez dominated his division for close to a decade kind of like Ali and the Klits.
