Sugar Ray Leonard has told the tale of seeing Thomas Hearns pretty much every day on a pre-fight press tour. Hearns was always wearing a T-shirt, sat with his shoulders slumped, and at the podium never really stood up straight. Leonard said he kept hearing how big Tommy was but dismissed it after seeing him in person. Then they get in the ring and Hearns steps out of his robe -- and flexes that wide cobra-like upper body, shoulders at full width and stood up tall -- and Ray said he freaked out a bit. He complimented Hearns on the psychology of it, not revealing until it was time just how big and poweful he was.
No question for me, it has to be Valuev: This content is protected Reputation and ability aside, if you stepped in the ring with him you'd fight purely to survive based on his overwhelming stature and looks.
In the build up to settling on Valuev I did think of Briscoe, Ketchel and Williams. Ketchel looked detached, Briscoe looked like he wanted to scare you.
Tom Sharkey Jack Dillion Harry Greb Britain's Eddie Phillips those really hard looking *******s, strong, unrelenting and could eatcha if you didn't have the reserve, skills or experience to beat them... they beat many an opponent just on intimidation, fighters scared shitless of them! and of course, Hagler, Duran & Tyson, but the old school boys had thet no nonsense look & attitude about them.
I also thought of Dillon and Greb, and I normally imagine Flowers but someone said it already. The same names floating about. Add Hagler, Duran, Tyson, Foreman, Benn and Liston and we have our top names.
I dont know about scary looking but some of these guys you meet and they just dont seem right. Mclellan is definitely one of them. Also Michael Moorer, hes quiet and soft spoken but he has a short fuse and a bad temper.
This content is protected This content is protected I know its not boxing but "Noseratu" is the scariest looking ******* in combat sports.
Golota just looked like a stone cold crazy psycho, which is more or less what he was. Knowing that could, and probably would, schiz out at any moment, added to his aura. This content is protected Carl Froch I think is kind of intimidating. He just looks like a right hard ******* who'd chin ya if you looked at his missus the wrong way. Cold, dead looking eyes. This content is protected Joe Louis must have freaked a lot of fighters out with his dead-calm, don't give a crap, look that he always had. Knowing what he could do to you couldn't have helped. Not surface scary, but terrifying if you put him into context. This content is protected Finally Abe Simon. Picture kind of speaks for itself, I think. This content is protected
