I asked Chris Byrd about Lewis on Twitter. Asked him about why the fight never went materialized. Byrd (a great guy by the way) responded: "I could never understand why someone would fight so hard to get the Belt just to give it up."
i think it's interesting when people say that Lennox avoided Byrd because his style may have created problems. with that being said, i rarely speak nicely of lennox, but i do believe lennox would've destroyed byrd if they fought ...and i bet most agree. it is a shame that byrd met wladimir twice instead. does that make wladimir less scared, or did lennox really just prefer more competitive opponents?
Lennox would have won. I really do wish he had given Byrd a shot though. Lewis never faced a southpaw in his entire pro career. I think Lennox would have gotten the KO.
Nobody wanted to see that fight as I remember it. I wish it had happened retrospectively though, Byrd would have set him problems.
As a compensation he got the belt and some other paydays not to mention bragging rights for life that Lennox ducked. Wasn't there some step aside money paid by Don King For Byrd not to fight LL 1 mil which is still less than the fight would have made?
Lewis is a class above Byrd. Too small to give Lewis ant problems. Byrd should be happy it never happened.
