Not a knock on Ray Leonard, but this man retired/went on more vacations than FMJ

    More over, when was it ever suggested that they were anything more than solid contenders? There is a gulf of difference between attaining top ten status and being a "can". Only someone who's never boxed - even as a ****ing recreational activity - wouldn't have a clue what level you need to be at to reach it. And the difference between then and now is the top ten actually fought amongst eachother to sort this type of **** out. Now it's predominantly assumption based and you've got champions with multiple defenses who havent even beat one contender in the division.

    Why would I? I'm simply stating a fact.

    I Love Ray to bits as a boxer and respect him for all he's done. I still think he's the best fighter in the 80's, Duran 70's.

    But to say that he didn't take just as many vacations/retirements as Floyd is borderline ridiculous.

    I'm not even bashing Ray, for the last time. I'm simply stating that retirements/vacations are normal for ELITE fighters and has no KNOCK on ATG status.

    Floyd came back and fought the #2 p4p fighter in Marquez. He fought the #3 p4p in Mosley.

    Once again, you fail.

    He went to the doctors in 82, came back in 84 and fought Howard. Got knocked down, retired again and waited for Hagler.

    Stated in the post fight press conference "It was my drive/skill level, it's depreciated and I will retire once more"

    Said nothing about his eye, because it was already fine. He was sanctioned to fight ffs.

    Seems like people don't know anything about Ray on this forum :patsch.

    All everyone says is "Detached Retina" when it wasn't the case at all post 1984.

    Please do your homework.

    I think the suggestion is that he should've fought someone like Andy Price in his fourth or fifth fight:patsch

    No he didn't. It was because of his inactivity that floyd fell out of people's rankings. He was back to number 2 after he beat Marquez impressively.

    Shows double standards in boxing fans. And boxing fans have more double standards than any other sport.

    It's a shame guys like PityTheFool, Xerant among others never want to admit the truth.

    Blind boxing fans. Oh well

    Trying to throw the red herrings out by saying "SRL > Floyd" as if that has anything to do with the initial point.

    I even stated "SRL > FLOYD" but of course with their limited knowledge, has nothing to say but to repeat it.

    Anyways, I'm done with the thread. I made my point and it's good to see that some guys who knows something about boxing agrees with me.

    I've never slated the Saviour of Boxing for his lay-offs,and I'm just saying it's a totally different situation to Ray's and doesn't warrant comparison.

    You will not admit that Floyd/SRL's retirements are similar in nature (which they are)

    SRL retired in 82 (Eye injury), comes back in 84 and fights, gets KNOCKED DOWN for the first time in his career.

    Retires after saying that the drive wasn't there, waits for Hagler.

    After Hagler, retires again and refuses a rematch with Hagler until years after. Fights in 91, RETIRES AGAIN until his last bout vs Camacho

    Floyd retired in 07 (Body Injury) after DLH, but returns 7 months later against Hatton. Retires again (Body Injury/Family Issues) and returns in 2009 against the #2 p4p fighter

    As you can see, it's ludacris to rip Floyd for retiring because SRL retired way longer and way more times than Floyd did.

    Double standard much?

    A detached retina is as good a reason to retire as you'll get (especially back then)
    Then saying it's not there because he toiled against a far inferior fighter is perfectly acceptable.

    Floyd has never felt he was deteriorating and aches and pains is hardly career threatening.

    See,you make me have to post like I'm slating Floyd when I'm a major fan of the Saviour of Boxing.

    But I'm sorry mate.They're not similar at all and that's in no way disrespectful to Floyd.

    No he gets shat on because he doesn't face fighters in their prime he waits for them to have wars first or start to look like they are slipping.

    His timing outside the ring with regard to when to fight people is ATG timing.
