Did The Ring name the wrong Fighter of the Year in 2001?

On The Ring's website, they have a list ranking the 10 best single years that a boxer has had since 1992. It is written by one man, Lee Groves, and is his opinion, which I certainly don't fully agree with.

The Ring named Bernard Hopkins the 2001 Fighter of the Year.

He listed, in this article, Floyd Mayweather's 2001 as being the third best year for a boxer in that span, only behind Oscars' '97 and Johnsons' '03. He listed Hopkins' 2001 as the seventh best year.

    Hopkins' 2001- 2-0, 1 KO
    W UD Keith Holmes
    W TKO12 Felix Trinidad

    Mayweathers' 2001- 3-0, 2 KO
    W TKO10 Diego Corrales
    W UD Carlos Hernandez
    W RTD9 Jesus Chavez

What do you feel about this? Who had the better year?

  2. I'd say Hopkins out of the two because of his owning of Tito. Close though.

How are either better than Whitaker's 1993?

damn it's tough for me to choose. Hopkin's win made him p4p number one, so from that standpoint, you can say him.
But Floyd also has 2 very solid wins over guys who would go on to win titles and his best win over Corrales.

    Your answer is Mayweather, btw.

I got distracted by the since 1992. It makes no sense... Whitaker took out the Lineal WW Champ and P4P #4 McGirt and P4P #1 Chavez. The latter is obviously the best win out of any amongst the fighters and years brought up here while I'd say McGirt is certainly on the same level if not higher than 01 Corrales or MW Trinidad.

I think Mayweather edges it, but Johnson's 03 wasn't that good. Knockout over a shot Roy Jones and a gift against Tarver.

    Yeah, Whitaker's '93 was boss...

I'd put the McGirt victory below Corrales and Trinidad, but nonetheless a great one.

"Shot" Roy Jones? Maybe. But he had only just left unbeatable superhuman stature the fight before. "Gift against Tarver?" I disagree.

For the record, I think the Mayweather/Hopkins 2001 debate is very close, but I definitely favor Mayweathers' year here.

Discounting Johnsons' win over Jones is like discounting Hopkins' win over Trinidad entirely on the grounds that Trinidad was a natural WW and didn't accumulate an impressive win afterwards. Or like discounting Whitaker over Chavez because it was Chavez's first world class fight ever at WW.

Did Pacquiao not have a great year in 2008 because the majority of fans felt he narrowly lost or drew with JMM?

    ---

By the way, the article must be a typo. Glen Johnson's beast year was 2004. W Woods, W Jones, W Tarver

Becoming undisputed is such a rarity in the sport that I think giving it to Hopkins is acceptable.

Trinidad sealed that for Bernard. Mayweather's opponents were not the caliber of Tito. Not close.

I was on ESB back then and remember that Tito was on fire and the Puerto Ricans were the equivalent of what the *******s are today. In all seriousness, Tito was a wrecking machine and is an ATG 147. Diego was a good win, Jesus Chavez and Carlos Hernandez were also good but that was it.

No. Trinidad was an undefeated champ. Jones had just been brutally knocked out and did virtually nothing good for the rest of his career. Johnson has no chance against a prime Jones.

And Johnson lost to Tarver the first time. I was there and nobody had it for Johnson. I watched it on TV later and came to the same conclusion. Johnson had a good year, but that's it. Nothing too special, just surprising considering who he was.

I agree. Tito was generally rated as the #1 or 2 P4P fighter in the world at that time. Corrales was considered dangerous, but wasn't as accomplished or highly rated as Tito. Hernandez was actually supposed to be an easy fight for Mayweather.
