Correct mate comparing fighters from different eras is difficult indeed but I will give it ago , Greb would have mopped the floor with the pair of them on the same night , Mickey Walker would have too , could anyone imagine any middleweight going eight rounds with Max Schmeling like Walker did ?

Both Mundine and Geale would have starched him early. Fighters from yesteryear are over hyped by boxing "historians", the fact is they would be second rate athletes now and the techniques needed to win a fight today they don't posess.

His uncoordinated "shadow boxing" and pre-dinosaur calisthenic routine in that video are truly dire and him and his fat sparring partner are not exactly prime physical specimens.

 

Totally disagree mate , boxing was more boxing back in the day , feints , angles , variety of punches etc many of these boxing basics are being lost over time , don't get me wrong I ain't one of these any old time fight fans who insist every fighter of yesteryear would beat any of today's guys but in this case I do .

 

I don't think so much that things have been lost, more deemed ineffective and thus phased out. The wrestling and mauling of yesterday wouldn't be tolerated by any of the referees today.

 

How do you phase out a certain punch ? And ANY punch during a bout is effective IF its deemed a scoring punch , agree to a certain extent regarding your wrestling comment it seems the pace of top draw fights is faster these days but then again the fights are shorter ie three in champion ship bouts and between five and Seven in others .

 

Well boxers now turn their punches over somewhat, as gloves have developed so have techniques and styles. Nobody has a palms up stance anymore.

 

..Darcy v's Greb has always been the ultimate old school match up for me too..thought about this one a few times over the years..I gotta go with the Fighting Farrier with a split points win...

..and as far as verses Mundine and Gealey..well the bottom line is the Greb ruled boxing in his day..the best of the best..back when fighters fought to eat..and honestly..I can't see Mundine or Geale being and more than contenders in those times...and as far as advances in technology and training techniques..who's to say that Greb wouldn't have benifited as well and dominated still..
..thinkin' about it..if Mundine got rattled by blokes like Siaca and Garth Wood..no way he'd hold a animal like Harry Greb off...
..how would Mundine react to a thumb/elbow/headbutt?..not very well i'd imagine..

That kibbits play spar with Philadelphia Jack O'Brien is no indication what so ever of his abilities as a fighter any more than Michael Jordan in a one on one kibbits with George Miken allowing Miken to slap away his shots ect.

 

..fighters have been turning their punches over since the beginning of the last century..Kid McCoy was world renound for his 'corkscrew punch' and Dempsey also had a similar technique where he twisted his fist on impact with devestating results..just sayin'..:good

 

You're more than entitled to your opinion. I am a firm believer in the fact that modern boxers > old school boxers. Sports don't go backwards, I refuse to believe that boxing is a sport that hasn't evolved when every other sport has.

Sure there are all time greats and legends but they are considered that because of their records at the time.

Humans get faster, bigger, stronger and smarter through every generation. And this will always happen.

 

..nah mate..regardless of the era..Greb has the form on the board..back in the day on one champion in each division..and less divisions...very few of today's fighters can lay claim to that..and certainly not Mundine..:deal
