I currently train in Muay Thai (for over a year now at intermediate level), had some inter clubs etc and want to make the transition into boxing. I'm 26 now and realise that I my be too old to start in the amateurs and then go pro. Would starting off in the unlicensed scene be a good start I.e. European Boxing Fed, British Boxing Union etc getting some bouts under belt and when ready apply for BBBofC license? Bit of a dream I know but something that I've wanted to pursue for a while, Any feedback would be great!!
You might want to join an amateur club first off and see if you don't mind getting wallopped in the face with a bit of sparring and see if your ok with this, getting whacked in the nose will make or break you.
Like I said I'm training in Muay Thai so were heavy sparring all the time, I enjoy it don't mind getting hit as its expected, so I don't think that would be an issue.........until me nose breaks then I might think ****! So at moment I believe I'd be fine with that, Cheers mate
First thing get in a boxing gym and put in some hard sparring. If you ask around you can get some closed door fights, proper set up, 10 rounders with judges, they just aren't official and dont go on your record.
My thai boxing coach said he would train / support me as he's done boxing in the past so training wise I know ill get looked after, just the right fights / organisation to get into. Don't want to do the white collar stuff as the standard of wind milling does not appeal to me, I got technique and want to use it.
What you reckon then? Carry on with the training then have a go a few bouts in the unlicensed game???
Why not go amateur for a year or so, then you will know if your good enough? I dont see the point in going the unlicensed route, your young enough to have a year at the amateur game?
Thank you for your advice I've been told by some locals I'm too old to start in the amateurs ill look into it, Cheers mate
Old maybe in comparison but not too old to fight in the amateurs. I think you can box amatuer until into 30's, I thought it was 40 but maybe that for a pro license! You would only want a year at it.
You are not too old - Plenty of time yet. You have till you turn 34 for standard senior bouts (i.e. 17 to 34) and you can box as an amateur in the masters category until you turn 40 (34-40). If you are serious about improving, join a good amateur gym. You should be able to get plenty of fair bouts and have plenty of good quality sparring (obviously depending on which club you join).
This. Some of the shows up here the fighters are allowed to bring their own gloves etc, too dodgey for my liking.
Anyone know how much the bbbofc fighters license is??? Just out of curiosity, my thai boxing one is only £20, I heard the pro boxing license is over a grand??
