ANTHONY Mundine will use the heartbreak of watching his childhood gym being torn down and rebuilt as fuel for his grudge match with Daniel Geale.

Mundine yesterday worked the pads and sparred an invisible opponent for one hour in front of a big crowd of more than 100 friends, family and media at the famous Tony Mundine Elouera Gymnasium at Redfern that is set to be demolished as part of a redevelopment of the Block by the Aboriginal Housing Company.

In the well-used 28-year-old facility, Mundine impressed on fans that he was ready for the "biggest fight" of his career to date when he takes on fellow Aussie Daniel Geale on January 30 in an IBF middleweight world title showdown at Sydney Entertainment Centre.

He was there with his dad Tony Mundine in 1984 when the gym was first opened and he will train there for the last time next week.

Every bout he won in Australia was spearheaded from the iconic, but weathered facility, still plastered with posters of past glories and old equipment. "It's been a big inspiration for me," Mundine said yesterday.

"It's been there my whole career. I was there when it opened.

"I've got that affinity with the people. I represent the streets. I think I get a lot of support from that. It was a great turnout. Great love. All the people were showing me love."

It is the venue where so many of our boxing champions have trained, including recently Billy Dib, Danny Green and Jeff Fenech. Tony Mundine, who also used the gym before he retired in 1984, said it was sad to see the end of such an important part of Australian boxing.

"It's very sad, but you have to upgrade everything these days. It's sad to see it get pulled down. I just hope the new gym will be just as good for the kids," Tony Mundine said.

Anthony Mundine believes his final public training session at the iconic facility had a touch of Muhammad Ali's famous Deer Lake training base where he prepared for his final fight. But Mundine, 37, insists the similarities end there.

SYDNEY KINGS welcomed Anthony Mundine to their training session on Thursday amid their form slump in the NBL, but coach Shane Heal says he will not be using the bravado of ''The Man'' to inspire his players as they prepare to take on the Melbourne Tigers on Friday night.

The Kings lost three of their past four games in recent weeks to weaken their grip on a top-four spot. They are still third on the ladder but, having played more games than any other team, a finals berth is far from guaranteed. As they prepared to face a Tigers team enjoying a minor resurgence, Heal denied his players were lacking the spirit to win, but must put in a stronger performance at the Kingdome than they have in recent games.

''We don't really need our spirits lifted, there's no role here other than the fact that we welcome in people that are successful. I think the fact he's [Mundine] here watching basketball is a positive for our sport,'' Heal said. ''We're at a time where I wouldn't expect anything less than the guys to fight. I feel these guys need to look in the mirror and come back with a little bit of toughness tomorrow night because it certainly didn't happen last week.''

Heal conceded his squad had taken a step backwards since the break for the NBL All Star game late last month, and must quickly rediscover their form with only 10 games to go. He has put his players on notice to show more determination and strength on the court, and win the individual battles against the Tigers to keep their season on track.

''This last month has been very disappointing for me,'' Heal said. ''Last Sunday was the most important, now this one is the most important, and when we go to New Zealand next week that will be the most important. You build it up, and they're all such must-win games. This is a really big game. There's a great rivalry with Melbourne, and they're starting a mini comeback. They're a really talented team.''

Mundine, an avid basketball fan, watched as the Kings trained at the Entertainment Centre on Thursday, and believes the players must find form among themselves. ''I think you've got to find that within, within the team,'' he said. ''That will happen all the time, especially with team sports. I've been around that with football, and you go through a slump when confidence is down. But you have got to regather and get together and turn it around, flick that switch. I think they'll find that sooner or later.''

Mundine appeared calm despite the pressure of his fight against Daniel Geale on January 30. ''There's always a calm before the storm,'' Mundine said.
