Roy Jones ATG Placing Post Ruiz, Heavyweight Title Defence.

    How would Roy Jones have placed in the ATG rankings if he'd retired after the Ruiz fight?

    Their was talk of Jones defending against Holyfield, Tyson or Byrd, would he have won, and how?

    I rate on a combination of how good I feel you prove to be at your best and your overall achievements. So, I can't see that there would be much difference for me if he retired before losing the magic. His losses don't erase his wins or anything.

    I fully agree, whatever the travesty his post Ruiz career has become his record before this remains intact.

    However I think too many people will remember the losses and possibly drop him a notch or two down the ATG list.

    Roy was a bigger cherry picker than Floyd, sometimes staggers me that a lot of people hold him in high regard.

    he faileda ped test in the earlys 2000s but got away with it by paying some patheic fine as it was in indinapolis if memory serves me right so he doesnt rate as atg full stop imo
    unfortantly as brillant as he was you have to seriously doubt anything he achieved which is a shame

    There was talk of him fighting LL until he retired, Lewis would have crushed him.

    something people like to forget when they rave about how magical he was..he was drugged up to the ears

    roy jones was/is a scumbag anyway so I don't mind seeing him getting KO'd, and watching Calzaghe clown him was a joy

    He was a KO waiting to happen at HW and probably drugged-up to the eyeballs.

    He was smart and lucky to have faced Ruiz for a belt, and smart and lucky to leave the division when he did.

    That was one of the most cringe-worthy and embarrassing things I've seen in a boxing ring - Calzaghe's awkward, unnatural showboating against the empty shell of Roy Jones.

    He always looked faintly ******ed when he started showboating (remember all that weird after the bell stuff against Bika?)

    Jones showed a lot of bottle that night, he was being slapped senseless, he had that terrible cut (that his inept cut man seemed incapable of staunching) but he stuck with it and went the distance.

    Robinson,Duran,Ali,Leonard,Tyson etc all got their ass kicked against average fighters when they was old and past it. Dont see anyone holding that against them.

    True but how many of the names you mentioned cherry picked his opponents that went beyond ridiculous with Jones?

    Jones was basically peerless though. He could have fought the best, the worst, and everything in between and it still would have resulted in a Roy Jones win. He was light-years ahead of everyone.

    Well said.

    I know the common opponent argument is invalid (someone always comes back with the Ali/Norton/Frazier - Foreman/Frazier/Norton comparison) styles and all that.

    BUT

    Look at Jones against Sugar Boy Malinga, then look at Malinga against Jones contemporaries Eubank/Benn/Reid.
