Vitali was winning when the fight was stopped but I think he would have lost had it gone 12 rounds. Byrd was outboxing Vitali is the mid/late rounds and it's a complete myth that Vitali was pitching a shut out.

That said, there's no way Byrd would have stopped Vitali.
