    I competed at 34 :think

You don't have to compete to be serious about it btw. I no longer compete but if I spar it's nothing like this unless I'm in with a total noob. And then it still won't look like this because if I don't actually punch him a little, he won't learn ****.

I was at a MMA gym once where they spar like this...they tend to lose most fights that don't go to the ground..and they even lose many of those.

You don't always need to try to kill each other..but you do need to throw with some intentions.

Me and the guy were basically practicing moving around the ring. Shadow sparring, so to speak. This was at the end of the day, after class was over. I don't plan on competing, but I do love sparring, and was in the ring the with a guy who got sparked by Sergio Martinez. His name is Russell Jordan. I'm nowhere in his class, obviously, but he did give me props on my movement and my jab.

Your stiffness and robotic slips would cause anyone with a clue to just faint you into whatever spot they wanted and than drop whatever they wanted on you.

Too side on and all arms. Your upper body should be flowing and relaxed, your arms and neck are completely rigid the whole time. Everything should be coming from your feet, every movement. The only time your arms should be tensed is when you are making contact. You don't need to tense your arms to hold them up. You don't get any range on your right because of your stance, you need to twist right around to fall short and off balance whenever you throw it and your left jab is almost a backhand. People get so afraid of being 'square on', it doesn't really matter how square on you are as long as your feet are in the right position and you have other things working.

Honestly, bro, you're way too tense about the action itself. You worry too much about getting hit.

That ain't fear, now. It's worry. You don't want to take a shot, and it's interfering with your every movement. It all flows from comfort. You're new, so you aren't going to be comfortable for awhile, but what you CAN do is focus on something each sparring session. You also look like you are trying REALLY hard to keep from delivering a hard shot. Just work.

Have a goal, have some tricks you are determined to try, have a primary note for yourself(I'm going to use my jab more today), and go do it.

Going out a sparring light with nebulous intentions and no trust for your technique serves nothing.

Trust me, intention and sparring with some purpose actually helps you loosen up. I've been fighting 30 years, and I look robotic, stiff, and unimaginative when I'm bullshitting in a no danger spar.

Next, stop caring about D. Defense at the young level is going to be as much about feeling and experience as about actively executing techniques. Defense is 80% muscle memory and awareness. Practice that by simply executing your plan and punching. If you are being schooled, you'll get out of the way of what you can, and be fine.

Next, fight, man. You're working hard, give yourself the joyful memories an the stories of battle.

Keep at it, bud! Keep us posted.

funny thing is tony i was actually nicer to you than allot of guys on here....for whatever reason you decided to have a go at me after I made a joke about being able to take those two 11 year olds that RDJ posted. I actually originally posted that you looked scared....but i think i took it down...if you really want to fight..than you gotta get over that..if you wanna have six pack abs and be able to tell girls you work out at a boxing gym, than by all means keep up with doing it as you are..truth is its most likely better for your brains...but in that case..dont post any more "sparring" videos...

Jack Dempseys book championship fighting says to teach guys offense first...because if you teach defense first you tend to create a timid fighter.. he basically suggests its better to show a guy the stance and all that...teach the punches..let him spar some and get a feel for it, than teach the defense (of course that means he is going to get hit allot for some sparring sessions..but thats old school tough **** i guess).

i personally wouldnt put a fighter in to spar before he has learned at least some basic catches and parries, having said that..i think the idea of focusing on offense first is correct.

Defense is all reflex and training, man. Dempsey had it spot on. A slip or a duck isn't some technique you bust out like a jab. It's a reaction to a punch. It's fast, and it needs to be ingrained.

You can't really think "I'm gonna slip this ****!" at any high level. You're gonna get hit, or you aren't. Your training, your awareness, and your reflexes determines the outcome there.

I tell my fighters to stay focused, stay wary, and work their plan. Worry about what they are doing, and trust their technique and training to deal with the other guy.

No, you took offense to my saying that you don't seem like the athletic type based on your esb persona. I didn't mean anything by it. The way you act on here you seem more like a practical joker or comedian than a athlete, what with all the alts, and trolling and whatnot. I also never saw you talk about boxing at all, until I started coming to the training forum.

As far as taking criticism, it doesn't bother me at all whatsoever, not even RDJ's video of the kids. I welcome criticism, even if it isn't tastefully done. Tell you what, though. I think we're sparring today. I'll post a much better example of what I can do in there...:good

So athletes can't be practical jokers? All "athletic types" have the same persona? Come on!
