Sparring vid. Tips?

    ... highly skilled 11 year olds sparring with intention. Seems like you weren't very welcoming of criticism.

    Oh, come on, man. You know damn well you were being funny. The kids were obviously advanced, but you chose them in particular to drive your point home that the video I posted was weak, i.e., this is what kids can do, and you can't...

    I am welcoming of criticism, that why I initially asked for your opinion before making a thread. You and I have been going at it for years now. If I was so against harsh criticism, I definitely wouldn't have asked YOUR opinion. :lol:

    Wow, it's been awhile. Almost forgot about you, but this is still all I see...

    So, what are we doing? Are we squashing this bull**** now? Letting bygones be bygones? Of course, I still won't know what you said unless someone quotes it...:conf I having a burning feeling that whatever you just wrote above wasn't positive.

    Negative. I posted this particular video because it's one of my favourite sparring vids and the first one that popped in my mind. I posted this same video on facebook and several times already on this forum.

    Btw. I can't do what these kids do either, they are more advanced than I am in most if not all aspects.

    Which is why I didn't quite get your PM, but fair enough I guess there is some truth to this statement.

    Fair enough, RDJ. Here's another sparring session, although it is still a poor example, considering it was 6th round, 6th sparring partner... and exercise my trainer calls suicide. 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest in between, a fresh partner coming in there with you after everyone around. Suicide indeed.

    He says it's all about having to deal with two things - stamina, and dealing with different styles. Makes a lot of sense, imo, although it is some hard work. That video was the last round, and the five previous all had differences I had to deal with, e.g., one guy was 6'3, so I had to work on fighting a much taller opponent, which if I ever decide to compete, I'm going to have to do, because I refuse to drop any weight off my 5'6, 147 frame. Another guy was short, but good at inside fighting, so I had to deal with that. By the time it got to the chick in the video, there wasn't much benefit to that style-wise, but regarding stamina, yeah. I was ****ing exhausted, though.

    I've been to a lot of boxing gyms, and heard a lot of training techniques, but this thing with fighting opponents with different styles ever round is genius to me, something all boxing gyms should do. Done correctly, and with commitment, it could build a fighter with FMJ type ability to adjust to his opponent.

    Changing opponents every round or 2 is fine. Many gyms do this.

    However I don't think a novice will gain much from sparring (or rather, trying to survive haha) through extreme fatigue like you were in the last round.

    You need to be working on boxing skills / technique whilst sparring. You can work on your fitness through shadow boxing, bag work, pad work and general strength and conditioning work.

    Good effort though mate.

    What the ****? A girl throwing around and beating up a larger, grown man. You were just a live boxing bag for the coaches female boxer, have some damn pride man. Find a trainer who is interested in teaching you the fundamentals of boxing and take it from there. That training isn't helpful for you at all, your stance is terrible and you need to stop bending over to stare at the ground, that's not defence.

    work on you footwork more. Shawdowbox rounds of straight footwork working on going side to side and cutting an opponent off. You just followed his footsteps the whole time

    I was dead tired, but also ****ing with her because she can't hurt me at all. I gave the vid that title to get views, tbh. She is good, though. When it comes to her, for me, it's about stamina, not honing skills. At the same time, she get some experience as a young female again a larger, stronger opponent. I think it's good training.

    I don't take it as you being a *****. She wasn't bullying me, though. You can hear me teasing her in there. I was just tired as ****. No way in hell I would have let a experienced guy wail on me like that, no matter how tired I was.

    But your fundamentals should never be compromised for any reason. Everyone makes mistakes when tired, but you seem to lack the basic structure necessary to begin with. The initial trading of jabs gave the impression it was going to be an actual sparring session, unlike the pretty much paired-up shadowboxing from the other video, but you never threw a punch after and kept bending down below the waist and exposed your body while compromising your balance and offering your head on a platter. Headgear is hard enough to see out of already, turning away from the punches only makes things worse. This isn't an easy habit to kick but it's necessary.

    I'm not sure what the issue is, but this set-up doesn't seem to be working for you. You need to own the basics. This isn't to suggest you can't hold your own or can't improve, but there needs to be a re-tooling.
