I'd also like to revisit these assertions, since my original hunch that he isn't top 10 all time in Oz in the sweet science appears to have been upheld by acclamation. (barring a few Chocoholics)

How much credit does crossing over really warrant?

Are you a greater athlete if you're a passing fair jack-of-all-trades/master-of-none than a single discipline sportsman of higher accomplishment?

I mean, here in the USA nobody ever considered Bo Jackson (who achieved fame for being very good - not great - at both American football and baseball) to be among the absolute best in either game during his time. His crossover ability was seen as more a curiosity than a badge of athletic greatness. Michael Jordan isn't the #1 competitor of his decade because he participated in both basketball and baseball. He became the basketball GOAT, and his MLB career is viewed as a lark. If anything, his time away from the NBA only hampered what could have been an even greater run to further distance himself - sort of like Ali's exile.

To me, it's a similar argument to emphasizing weight-climbing vs. holding down and dominating one class when ranking p4p. I don't think diversifying your sports portfolio should necessarily bag you higher marks than one who sticks to one thing and puts in the hard work to do exceedingly well at it. Likewise, I don't think someone like a Marvin Hagler should be penalized for dominating a rich middleweight scene and never jumping around. Also, you've got heavyweights who don't have the luxury of moving up...nor, often, down.

So he clearly isn't one of the all-timers in boxing or rugby league. Does the fact that he was notably decent in his time at both somehow launch him into "top 10 Australian athletes"? That to me seems to be over-prioritizing the crossover aspect. (just as some boxing fans over-emphasize success in multiple divisions)

The greatest ever athlete has been his own moniker picked up and ran with by the staunchest of huggers. He never reached or maintained a true level of greatness in either sport. Once at that level to be an ATG the main qualification is consistency of performance over quality of opposition to which you are dominant over. This has always has been his undoing. Lack of quality opposition and his ability to overcome it when faced with it.

I don't completely discredit versatility and don't think you have to be near-GOAT in multiple sports to have a shout as upper echelon sportsman...but you should at least be top 10 in more than one to be saying that.

I DKSARL, but what I gather is he wasn't even the best Aussie from his own state during his time. The conversation in here looks to have illustrated his current Boxrec rank of just outside the 15 is not only appropriate but may even be a case of their points system overrating him!

So then, I can't see him being on a short list of ATG (within the context of Ausralia) in athletics.

perhaps at spot 9 or 10, but seriously, what a wasted career. hard to fathom the path he took instead of the one he could have taken.

He will look back with regret no doubt. His kids will be set up financially but he will have to live with the ridicule for the rest of his life. No amount of apologising will erase some of the stupid things he's said.

but good riddance that this circus (hopefully) is over....

mate, ive even missed a few....could be as far out as top 26th...:deal

he missed out because of quality of opposition, and results against world class fighters. green and echols were his biggest wins. he just never kept testing himself and collected the improvement that brings.

also, he has proven not to be durable.

The Problem Mundine had was he was a few years off in Rugby League from actually achieving his potential, he was a good playmaker, top 2 or 3 at the time but left before reaching the top.

I think if Mundine stopped boxing now he would make the sand mistake. If Geale is as good as some of you blokes believe, then Mundine proved his worth against a world class fighter, best in the division. If Mundine now takes the Geale route and fights top level fighters and wins, Mundine still has 3 or 4 years to grab a few top fights and maybe a title, then wouldn't it be fantastic to see Geale v Mundine 3 to Unify titles

How did Mandy prove his worth, he was dominated for 12 rounds.

How will he take the same path as Geale and beat the top fighters?

How does he have 3-4 years left at the top?

How does he grab a title?

And why would it be good to see a 3rd fight?

I'm not real sure where this is coming from, but none of it will or can happen.

I think most boxing fans know he had good skills and was a good fighter, but I think that there is an attitude in more casual fans and perhaps australia in general that he is/was a total scrub

    Proved his worth against Geale?

    3-4 more years? Title shots?

    Rubbermatch?

Daniel Geale is in the top 2 or 3 middleweights in the world. Few if anybody, anywhere dispute that. He made Mundine look extremely slow and second rate the other night and barely conceded him a round. Many had it a shutout.

That anybody could think Mundine will be still fighting in 3 or 4 years time beggars belief
