Mike Tyson's Marijuana Use May Have Been A Factor

    Written by Tim Graham

    Saturday, 31 July 2004 18:00

Tyson frequently broached the subject of his prolific marijuana usage during interviews in the days leading up to his crushing knockout defeat to Danny Williams in Louisville

The trainer cited two weight differentials -- the 35 pounds Tyson lost from the start of training and the 32 pounds that separated the combatants -- in the steady demise from rapid-firing, head-moving favorite to slow-footed, disinterested loser.

But it's easy for those who know Tyson to picture marijuana playing a role in his training for the Williams fight. Maybe the munchies prevented him from dropping below 233 pounds, the third-heaviest weight of his career.

"Mike told me that he had quit marijuana," Roach said, "and I told him "That's the best news I've ever heard.' I thought that's what was keeping him from the world championship. He spoke about it before and he made it public. He gave it up on his own, and he's been clean for almost a year now. He has not smoked marijuana.

Tyson smelled stronger than Spicoli's van when he showed up for the postfight news conference of Vitali Klitschko's victory over Kirk Johnson less than eight months ago. Others who were around Tyson said he was still smoking like a fiend in recent weeks.

There was no fear Tyson would need to submit to a drug test for Friday night's bout. Illegal narcotics and steroids conveniently aren't banned substances according to the Kentucky Athletic Commission.

Tyson joked that dope affected his performance two years ago when Lennox Lewis systematically broke him down. Speculation abounded that Tyson was on antidepressant medication before the lucrative bout so he aberrant behavior wouldn't spoil it.

"I don't know what the hell happened," Tyson told reporters. "I may have smoked too much weed, but I wasn't taking any drugs or anything."

Another time he was asked about the Lewis fight, Tyson replied: "Man, I don't know what I was on. Maybe I just smoked too much weed. There's no doubt I've been a monster."

BOXING: HEAVYWEIGHTS; Mercer Tries Charity For Lewis Rematch

In a style unusual to professional boxing, Ray Mercer is putting his money where his heart is by using a charity hook as a lure for a rematch with Lennox Lewis, the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion.

Last Saturday night, Lewis successfully defended his title against Andrew Golota with a first-round knockout.

Mercer and his manager, Marc Roberts, the chairman of Worldwide Entertainment & Sports, said they were offering Lewis $20 million to fight Mercer.

Mercer has agreed to forgo his entire purse with the stipulation that Lewis, should he lose to Mercer, will donate $10 million to Project Pride in Newark, which is Mercer's favorite charity.

Mercer and Lewis fought last year at Madison Square Garden and Lewis won a controversial majority decision.

''Everybody who saw the fight knows that Ray won the fight,'' Roberts said yesterday. ''Ray just wants the opportunity to whip Lennox Lewis again. He doesn't even want the money. He'll fight him any place, any time. We're ready to wire the money to an escrow account as soon as Lewis agrees to the fight.''

BOXING / TIM KAWAKAMI : A Wild Week in Heavyweight Division
    June 18, 1994|TIM KAWAKAMI

This was a week of chaos and goofiness in the heavyweight division, and it was hard to keep up even if you were one of the principals involved.

"Last night, we were very, very close to a deal to fight Lennox Lewis for the undisputed title in the spring," Michael Moorer's manager, John Davimos, said Friday. "And I wake up this morning hearing that they're announcing a Lewis-Riddick Bowe fight.

The dramatic Bowe-Lewis announcement, a bout tentatively set for November but which also could be delayed until spring of 1995, capped seven strange days of maneuvering and manipulating among heavyweights as Mike Tyson's release from prison draws nearer.

--On the verge of an agreement to fight Moorer, Lewis' promoter, Panos Eliades, struck a surprising deal with Rock Newman, Bowe's promoter, and both Eliades and Newman said that the winner of Bowe-Lewis should be viewed as the real champion.

The new deal throws Bowe's scheduled July 15 fight against Buster Mathis Jr. at Hollywood Park into serious jeopardy, given Bowe's recent cancellation of a bout because of back problems and Newman's stated desire to keep things safe and sane for Bowe leading up to a Lewis fight. Newman was uncertain when asked about the Hollywood Park fight.

Lewis also has a mandatory title defense in September against Oliver McCall, scheduled for London.

Ring Magazine ranked Lewis #32 best heavyweight. Behind Louis,Ali,Tyson,Foreman,Holyfield,Holmes etc

Lewis was behind Cleveland Williams and ahead of Earnie Shavers.

Lewis ducked fighters in their prime. Lewis is no different then any other fighter.
Vitali had sue Lewis to get a shot before their fight. Lewis beat a shot Tyson..did
not have the balls to fight him before that. Lewis would not fight bird or any
southpaw fighter. And Lewis got KO'd the **** out 2 times. I like Lewis, but all
you Lewis dickriders really **** me off!

Because Lewis was screwed out of a win in their first engagement by one of the most disgraceful decisions in modern boxing history. Everyone and their dog knew that Holyfield lost the first fight - but somehow the judges didn't.

#Ummm, Tyson paid LEWIS step aside mo0ney earlier on in his career because HE didnt want to fight LEWIS!!

Besides the main reason they didnt fight earlier was because Tyson was either in jail for raping people or suspended for biting people ears for most of their respective primes.

Lewis didnt even go pro until 89.

    Lewis beat Golota(Prime)
    Morrison(Prime)
    Mercer(Prime)
    Grant)Prime)
    Bruno(Prime)
    Tua(Prime)
    Briggs(Prime)
    Klitschko(Prime)
    Ruddock(Prime)

Holyfield was as good as he ever was when Lewis fought him. If he was past prime,it was VERY marginal.

The guy was still fighting for world titles and beating world ranked guys, well into his 40s

Have you actually seen the fight? Lewis won, it was close but easy to score. Give it up you're embarrassing.

Lewis was not at the world level in the pros when Tyson went to prison, he broke into that level about 8 months after Tyson went down, and then chased a fight with Tyson almost as soon as Tyson beat Bruno after being released from jail.

Don King went to court to avoid having to accept Lewis's WBC mandatory challenge so that Tyson could have a unification fight with WBA Champion Seldon instead. He had to give Lewis millions in compensation to get out of giving him a fight. Then once Tyson had won the WBA Title and Lewis came calling for a fight again as WBC mandatory Tyson and King promptly dumped the WBC Title to go fight Holyfield.

Simple fact of the matter is that Lewis was too far down the pecking order to fight Tyson before Tyson went to prison in 1992 and that Tyson and King did not want the fight with Lewis in 1996 or 1997 because they saw the opportunty to make more money with the bigger name of Holyfield. That cant be blamed on Lewis.

And then Holyfield was robbed of the second fight. Emmanuel steward himself said it!
No one mentions that. The "great" Lewis did worse in the rematch against an even older fighter.

If you're a young champion in your prime, you dominate. Ali vs Moore or Ali vs Patterson for example. The young Prime Ali dominating the older fighter comfortably. No bull**** rematches and Lewis whining. If he did his job against old Holyfield maybe they would have given it to him. **** Lennox.

Holyfield wasn't robbed in the second fight. It was a closer fight but Holyfield still lost by 8 rounds to 4 or, if your generous, 7 rounds to 5. The only reason anyone could think Holyfield "won" the second is because he put in a great effort after having had his arse handed to him in the first fight and actually made the second fight competitive. Holyfield was fighting to recapture the pride and the dignity he'd lost having been given that joke decision of a draw in the first fight but he did not do nearly enough for anyone to claim realistically that he won the second fight let alone that he was robbed.

And Lennox did do his job in the first fight. Holyfield won three rounds at best in that fight. It was a decisive victory for Lennox in every single way except on two judges scorecards. Lennox could do nothing about being robbed of a win by corrupt or inept judges. The rematch was a direct result of two judges not doing their job properly because they were either paid off or not up to the task.

Holyfield was old and past it and Lewis was young and in his prime?

You do realise that Lewis is under 3 years younger than Holy right?

Lewis was older than that Holyfield, when he beat Vitali so bad he looked like he had been mauled by a bear on acid.
