Question for those giving pointers - how helpful would posting a video of me shadowboxing or hitting the bag be when it comes to evaluating things I need to work on? I'm asking because our sparring sessions are becoming rarer for whatever reason....can't post vids like I'd like to.

Discipline your hands, man. Lots of reaching and poking.

Seriously, as far as I can tell, that is your biggest, by far, problem in live contact. You are GIVING dudes targets and chances. Stop. Stay contained and within yourself, and throw the punches with some snap, and get em back!

you're scared of getting hit. you lunge in with your jab. double jab if you miss that's fine take up the space then you pushed him back even further. thatll set you up to land punches because eventually he'll hit the ropes. there are nothing on your jabs, why are you just poking him? you're also just taking his jabs. why don't you do something? learn the basics, take a step or two back then around and take the middle of the ring. when he throws a single jab parry then counter with your own jab. if he doubles on his jab and he only does this do a hard parry on the first jab to set him off balance then jab with your own then that sets up the right. you aren't active enough keep popping out that jab seriosly you're giving him a reason to just walk in then and punch. be the first one to punch and in general stop being so scared and work on the basics. from your other video with you sparring that 13 year old you tried more fancy **** like the pull counter but no jab or combinations.

...well, at least you're keeping at it.
You gave him full control of the fight/pace. Need to know your distance man. Either close it up so he can't swing or move and make him miss. He was always at good range to do as he pleased.
He's got less technique than you, but bigger balls it seems. That's the difference.
Did you quit at the end?

Seems like you are not committing to your decision to punch. When that window opens you need to fire that shot, not worry about anything else, and get that hand back ASAP. Trust your landing the punch, form, conditioning, reflexes, and return to form to protect you. It is like your body language is screaming "I know it is coming, I know it is coming, I know..." Do it or back off. WAY off.

Also you don't really have fluid combinations or punch patterns at the ready. You aren't varying your offense so the guy seems to be confident that only your telegraphed jab is coming. The only shots you should be planning to land as solos are your jab or a lead cross which I don't think you should be attempting yet. Everything else you should set up planning to stick the 2nd or 3rd punch in a sequence. Those setups however are all dependent on your jab which needs MAJOR work. Get on the double end and heavy bag and focus on that jab.

Being honest, you seem like a guy who has been thrown into heavy sparring way too early when he isn't a natural "killer". IMHO, for "trained fighters", i.e., not naturals, hard sparring too early just makes them more reluctant fighters versus better fighters. I think you might need to back up and do "controlled" sparring or classes where you perfect parts and add to them. Like jab spar, jab-straight to the body, jab-anything to the body, etc... Mind you, that type of sparring isn't to make you a better fighter, but to condition you mentally to accepting what you are doing in there and become confident in using your techniques.

Right now you don't seem to have any foundation or style. How do you define yourself as a fighter? Be brutally honest with yourself too. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Are you scared/reckless? Are you heavy handed? Are you fast/slow? Are you a grinder or fight in spots? Etc... Liking Mike Tyson and being him are two different things. Same as liking Ali and being him. Answer this question honestly as it will be a guide to you on how to train and what outcomes to press for in sparring.

Whoever that coach is telling you to switch your stance when your lead hand is tired is out of his mind. That is a sure-fire way to get yourself sparked. Unless you are "That Dude" who has spent his entire childhood in a gym and is perfectly comfortable switching? Don't do that crap. Your arms are tired? Clinch or run. Do more bag work, shadow box with your gloves on, etc... but good Lord do NOT switch your stance mid fight! INSANITY!

Please start doing full rounds of jabs on the HB and double end. Your jab is the foundation right now your jab is a liability for you. :thumbsup

He caught me with a shot at the end that had a little buzzed, plus, he had knocked my contact out earlier. I didn't quit, went another round after I got my **** together. I don't know what you mean when you say he has less technique. He has FAR more experience than I do. He's 18, and has been in and out of the gym since age 8, according to him.

For now, the most comfortable thing for me to do is fight from the outside. I feel most comfortable reacting to what they are doing, as opposed to taking initiative. My strength, I think is the jab and footwork. My weakness is that I can't help but anticipate, and possibly fear that incoming shot, but this is mostly when I'm in against someone like this guy...I'm not as concerned about it when coach has me in against the kids, although even then, I like fighting from outside. Weight lifting for the past few years has definitely made me slower than I'd be otherwise.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and give me pointers. I initially got back into the gym to get the aesthetics down for a film, but I'm loving it more and more to the point where I might wanna have at least one sanctioned (I've had non sanctioned ones) amateur bout, just to say I did. Oh, and I (accidentally) KO'd the chubby kid today. :D

Your jab ain't your strength, bro. It's awful. BUT, if you are really comfortable sticking behind it, your whole style should fix itself once you fix your jab.

Keep your right hand up and fire it away, bro. No need to go Hasim Rahman on the guy. Just throw the shot like you mean it.

you need to stop trickling your jab, against this guy itll work but unless you have some rediculous hand speed like shane mosely, you wont get away with it. You need a good basic jab, then when you have it you can vary the type of jabs you use. Just listen to what i said last post. i also wouldnt take pride in acidently k.o. him either im sorry to say.

Stop talking as if you're a boxer. The fat kid fell over and didn't want to exercise anymore. If you think that weightlifting in itself slows you down then you know about as much about weightlifting as you do about boxing. At this stage you don't have any strengths. I'm not trying to be mean, it's just a fact that is obvious to anyone who has boxed before. Also your coach is a complete moron.

I meant accidentally, as in, I didn't mean to hit him that hard. I don't take pride in it. Felt bad, actually.
Heavy weight lifting can slow you down. That's why boxers don't lift weights like that. That's why most boxers have no chest, and don't have that bulky muscle you see on guys who lift a lot of weights. And don't feel like you have to explain that you're not trying to be mean. I'm here to learn. I don't mind being told that I look like ****. But I have to ask - what do you mean when you say that about my coach? Explain.
