Conditioning and pacing are just as important as "boxing skills". Robinson could have won every round. I've read conflecting reports on how close the bout was at the time of stoppage. Maxim won because he was better prepared for the conditions of fight night.
Had it been Robinson who outlasted Maxim after losing every previous round. We'd be all about what a boxing genuis he was. An example of this can be found of our cloctive admaiation of the Rope-A-Dope. (Officilly Ali was on pace for a UD.)

    1. Had Sanchez walked away from the ring on his on at the time. He had a full career and would deserve to be ratted as highly as he is now. Since he died so young there is that "What if" factor. Acording to a Eugully by Howard Cosell that's on youtube. Sanchez had only planed to stay in boxing another year.

    2. When ever Emanuel Stward talked of the fight he mentions that Hearns may have been injured before the fight. Rather true or not it dose not matter. It could be a case of Hagler imposing his will on Hearns. Sometimes boxing matchs don't come down to who the better boxer is but who can impose his will.

    3. I belive that rankings are 100% subjective. Espicilly when it comes to ATG rankings. I have my opinions you have yours. Some we agree on some we don't. I'm not going to lose it if you don't have the exact same rankings as I do. I am however bothered by the "fact" that some rankings are unarguable. Take for example Duran as the greatest lightweight for example. I belive that there were better lightweights. If you disagree I can live with that, or Robinaon should be unquestioned as the greatest boxer ever, and that status can never be chalanged. If you hold opinions because of your own research. Than we can agree to disagree, but if you hold an opinion because everyone else says so. I'd ask you to do some critical thinking. You may come to the same conclusion, you may not.

    :good

Agree about Duran, his lightweight defenses were not against any superstars. Only quality defense was against very capable Estaban "always get beat when he steps it up" Dejesus.

As for his iron chin at lightweight, the lion share of his challangers had sub .500 KO records anyway. Any that were over the .500..just barely.

The hardest punching lightweight of all time claim...All of his opponets had been KO'd in less rounds by other opponents. If you want to count AIDs infected Dejesus and punched-in-the-balls Buchannan as proof of greatest puncher of all time, OK grab at straws.

Like to see how Duran would have fared against prime Shane Mosely or Aaron Pryor.

Had Robinson won, we'd never heard a peep about the heat that night.

:lol:Yeah, because Mosley took on a Murderer's Row during his Lightweight reign.

Duran's Lightweight career was better than Mosley and Pryor's combined.

You thought you were going to get away with this? :nono

It was a blatant and disgusting robbery. Norton won no less than 9 rounds, including the 15th. Ali himself admitted that he lost.

Ali: "Yeah, I lost that fight."

Crazed Ali nuthugger: "Too close to call! Coulda gone either way!"

Crazed Ali hater: "Norton was robbed blind! Worst robbery ever!."

    Not even close.

A scorecard in favor of Norton isn't unreasonable, but neither was an 8-7 decision in favor of Ali. Robbery is a term that's used far too much on sites like this and a decision like this doesn't qualify. The decision was debatable...but not at all disgusting.

(Watch Rios-Abril, Escalera-Everett, et al for examples of robberies that are truly disgusting).

That Gene Tunney lost his first fight with Harry Greb, then won the next four.

He lost at least two, and might have lost the series.

The so called fact that Norton gave away the 15th round to Ali the the third fight.

Just to refresh my memory, just rewatched the 15th round of Norton vs Ali III. Norton won the round, as Ali simply danced around the ring flicking jabs that did connect except for maybe 2 or 3. Ali threw maybe 2 right hands that didn't seem to land. Whereas Norton lands a decent right at about the one minute mark, latter a good left hook, then multiple good shots the last minute of the fight.

I had Norton winning the fight 9-6

But society at that time had developed an infactuation with Ali, show ALi gets the decision.

Norton later in life has to live with the BS title of being the heavyweight champ that never won a championship fight.

Refute it. Duran had a higher quality and quantity of decent to great wins at Lightweight than either fighter combined. Who was Mosley's best opponent? Phillip Holliday? Interesting that he was also the only one Mosley was unable to stop, no? Pryor did **** at Lightweight, although I'm sure your next claim is going to have something to do with the age old "Everyone ducked him!" bull****.
