It tends to be assumed that JCC is the greatest body puncher in mexican history. Specially, Ring's 100 Greatest Punchers list cites him as such. But was he better than Saldivar? I have no answer because I've simply not seen enough Saldivar to make the call but from everything I've read he went downstairs consistently. That plus I agree to an extent with the same article in that Chavez's BEST weapon may well have been his straight right hand. So which of these Mexican warriors ruined body's better??:bbb
Chavez. His punching technique was better and I think what makes Saldivar less good at it than Julio is the fact that is harder for a southpaw. I think a southpaw is a bit more limited especially when we talk about uppercuts to the body.... Julio´s hook in the liver was class and always undermined the opponent sooner or later....
i agree Vic...JCC had a special claim to being the better of the two. As relentless as Saldivar was, Chavez was even more so...he was air-tight in his relentlessness. There was a certain intensity to Julio that surpassed even the Marciano-like Saldivar.
As a single punch, Saldivar's left straight to the body was right up there with Chavez's left hook. Chavez was the more refined and effective full on in-fighter, though. Saldivar was very technically sound when in boxing mode, but when he opened up he was like a tazmanian devil.
As a single punch Olivares left hook to the body is up there with best of the mexicans, he threw it as if he was stabbing someone in a prison yard, Brutal.
Zarate had a nice Fitzsimmons esque solar plexus shot. There's a reason Mexican fighters are known for their body punching.
