The best example you can give is from a fight that happened 27 years ago

 

I think to be fair it's the best example. Whether it happened yesterday or 27 years ago is irrelevant.

My point is that a mediocre and unremarkable performances from British underdogs will have people saying "he did himself proud, what a brave warrior with a massive heart." It's nonsense and somewhat apologist. Most of these fighters displayed mental weakness and fully expected to lose. They brought that mentality into the ring with them, their only determination was to do the absolute minimum needed to not "embarrass themselves." Which is fine, I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with people pretending these guys have given some incredibly brave and courageous effort when they quite clearly haven't (beyond the basic courage needed to step into a ring, as I said before).

 

John Murray v Rios brave as ****, Macklin, Barker v Martinez, Gavin last night all recent examples of british guys who went and challenged guys who were on a different level and in the case of gavin and murray guys who were physichally a lot bigger than them, and give it their all and deserve the credit for it!

I think you've given some good examples of decent efforts in reasonably competitive fights there. Whether they are extraordinarily brave efforts is debatable though.

 

Yep brave showing. Tried to win, came forward, put pressure on against a bigger, faster, harder hitting fighter. How was it not brave? Even when losing Rees was still firing back, not looking for anywhere to hide.

Least gutsy underdogs? Froch lacking guts against Bute then?

 

I was frustrated. I felt if he fought with more bounce and from a distance countering broner he could have won. Why did he rush. And why stand toe to toe.
His 1st round was brilliant. Just fight that way all fight.

Also trainer annoyed me for when Rees lost the 4th round and 1st sign of trouble just wanted to quit. Instead of redirecting Rees to fight like the 1st 2 rounds.

He could have ran for 12 rounds and tried to survive. How is standing and fighting with a superior man in every department not brave?

 

How did you know that you stupid ****? You been talking to Rees, Barker, Honeyghan?

 

I think everyone is going overboard on Rees here. (I like the guy don't get me wrong)

I really can't see HBO falling over themselves to give Rees the "Gatekeepers" job after that performance. That's really what Hearn was looking for here.

When I think of brave underdog performances I think Malignaggi v Cotto or Lopez v Ortiz, Matt Hatton v Canelo...... Silva v Angulo back in December really springs to mind.

Rees v Broner doesn't come close I'm afraid.

 

Broner is a bellend. Shaking his head every time he gets twatted in the face, and yelping when he punches is just gay. Adam Smith senses it and wants a piece.

 

Respect was earned, love him or hate him, the ends will always justify the means with Broner. Rees did well against a big guy in Broner. I can see Broner competing at middleweight after winning titles at LWW, WW and LMW. I hope he unifies at least one division and we don't see a Pacqiauo/Mayweather situation.

Some great fights down the line for Broner. Burns, Alvarez, Garcia to name a few.

 

I think Broner, is lethal when he gets to plant his feet, but for all his quickness, he doesn't have the reflex of Mayweather to defend like that, and it doesn't look like he closes or creates distance like Mayweather either.
For all the quickness and power, I think if you can move him around, he's very beatable, he's certainly very hittable.
