HBO's refusal to show Wlad Klitschko's fights: In retrospect, was it a good decision?

Hop is a superior tactician who applies every tool of his trade and is widly respected by fans of the sport. ...............HBO got behind K2 for years when they were based an America fighting on US time. Merchant called Wlad a "great fighter" after the Brock fight. What happened was their robotic style never changed and the fights become a boring jab jab clinch fest with no skill or entertainment on display..........Showmanship is a big part of boxing, they dont have any and thats why they were ousted.

You're probably too young to remember but there was a Polak going by the name of Dariusz Michaelczewski in the mid 90s. He boxed exclusively in Europe. He was highly exciting. He was unbeaten in 49 fights. HBO never showed a single round of his fights.

Had Michaelczewski been American and lived and boxed out of Chicago then HBO would have been all over him. Plain and simple :hi:

 

Probably the right decision he obviously wasn't doing the numbers for the amount he was being paid not to mention he fights the majority of the time on the otherside of the world at unsociable hours for an American audience.

Its like an American moaning that RTL aren't picking up all of Nonito Donaires fights.

That's not the sole ingredient. You also need marketable opponents, i.e. either latinos or Americans. If you have a Ukrainian or Pole who's fighting another Ukrainian there will be little interest in the US and from HBO.

HBO has no marketable US or latino HWs. Arreola was an exception and the Vitali fight did excellent ratings on HBO. Seth Mitchell just was destroyed so he won't qualify anytime soon. We will see about Jennings.

People keep making this simple black & white equation "If you're exciting you will get on HBO'. It just doesn't compute. The entire "Wlad fights boring" theory is quickly debunked as being the sole explanation. Wlad makes more money in Europe selling out stadium, so he fights in Europe. Therefore his fights are on at 2pm in the US. Add to that the fact that there are no marketable US based or latino HWs and that explains why HBO is disinterested.

Some of the most boring fighters are on HBO and they're on HBO because they're American, fighting American/latino opponents. Not because they're exciting.

 

Thats another reason they want no part of him. The opponents he fights. Sky Sports dropped him after the Mormek debacle. Thompson and Wack were dreadful fights. So were Haye ...in fact he hasn't been in an exciting fight in years. Thats why he's not wanted.

 

Even if Wlad was ultra-exciting, fighting Europeans in Europe filling out 50,000 stadiums. HBO wouldn't show it.

You're deluding yourself thinking if Wlad was exciting then HBO would be interested in showing his EU fights vs. European HWs nobody has ever heard of. They didn't show Michaelczewski, why would they show Wlad? :deal

 

HBO did show him when he was fighting in Germany. Like me they got sick of his boring jab jab foul right hand bore fests against undermatched opponents.

 

While his fights aren't the most exciting, he's still the heavyweight champ.

 

Exactly. The Eurotards are all "HBO would never..." but they DID and it was ****ing boring and nobody watched so they stopped.

There is an argument for saying that the likes of BHop and Ward would not be on HBO if they were not from the US, but that's not the same as saying Wlad is not on HBO because he's not American. If he was in the least bit exciting and took on all comers they would show his fights, like they show Pacquaio's and Khan's, neither of whom are from the US.
